France has committed to providing Ukraine with significant military assistance amounting to 195 million euros, utilizing interest from frozen Russian assets. This decision was officially announced on March 9, 2025, by French Minister of Armed Forces Sebastien Lecornu during an interview with La Tribune Dimanche.
According to Lecornu, the aid package will include 155-mm artillery shells and AASM air-to-surface missiles, which are equipped on Ukrainian Mirage 2000 fighters. Alongside these munitions, France is also set to expedite the transfer of AMX-10RC light tanks and VAB armored personnel carriers previously used by the French military.
This military assistance is part of France's broader strategy to bolster its defense capabilities alongside its NATO allies amid the continuing instability stemming from Russia's aggression against Ukraine. Lecornu emphasized the urgency of increasing military production to not only support Ukraine but also to meet the needs of the French armed forces. "France is increasing the production of military equipment to support both Ukraine and its own army," Lecornu stated.
Remarkably, this latest support follows similar initiatives by other Western nations, including the United Kingdom, which recently allocated 752 million pounds from profits generated from frozen Russian assets for Ukraine. This approach signifies a growing trend among NATO countries to utilize such revenues to assist Ukraine during its conflict with Russia.
Aside from the immediate assistance, Lecornu highlighted France’s plans to develop its military capabilities significantly. He mentioned the strategic priorities for the coming years, particularly focusing on ammunition production and electronic warfare capabilities. He underscored the importance of modern technologies, stating, "Key priorities include bolstering our ammunition stockpiles and enhancing our electronic warfare strategies." Among the technological advancements, the use of drones, automation, and artificial intelligence have also been flagged as areas of emphasis for the future of the French military.
To meet these demands, French industries are ramping up production capacity. Dassault Aviation plans to increase the output of Rafale fighter jets from two per month to four or five jets by 2026. Similarly, the production of AASM air bombs is expected to double by 2026, with plans for significant increases also on anti-tank missiles (Akeron MP) production slated for this year. The French government is forming new industrial partnerships, particularly with Thales and EOS, to accelerate the manufacturing processes within the defense sector.
On the other hand, Russia has sharply criticized France’s commitment to supplying arms to Ukraine. The Russian parliament declared this action as violating international norms, referring to France’s military assistance as part of a “hysteria born from impotence.” This response highlights the diplomatic tensions surrounding military support for Ukraine among Western nations.
France’s recent military aid announcement also aligns with discussions at the G7 summit held last year, where it was agreed upon to utilize frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine significantly. At this summit, leaders made commitments to provide Ukraine with substantial financial assistance, with the U.S. contributing approximately $20 billion and the EU contributing about 18 billion euros.
The situation remains tense as the war has now been going on for over 1,110 days, and the international community is closely monitoring developments. The military assistance provided by France and other allies is seen as pivotal for enabling Ukraine to sustain its defense against Russian advances.
