Four Russian Tourists Dead After Submersible Accident In Egypt

Most of the 45 tourists on board were rescued following the tragic incident near Hurghada.

A tragic incident occurred off the coast of Egypt on March 27, 2025, when a tourist submersible named 'Sindbad' capsized, resulting in the deaths of four Russian tourists and leaving several others missing. The accident took place around 10:00 AM, approximately one kilometer from the shore near Hurghada, where 45 tourists, including minors, were on a regular underwater excursion to view coral reefs.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the submersible was operated by a company called 'Biblio Globus', which specializes in organizing tours for Russian tourists in Egypt. The excursion was meant to take passengers to a depth of 25 meters to explore a 500-meter coral reef, a popular attraction in the area.

The Consulate General of Russia in Hurghada reported that, while four individuals lost their lives, most of the tourists on board were rescued and transported to local hospitals and hotels. Their health conditions were described as stable, and they were being accommodated in hotels including Sindbad Club, Mercure Hurghada, and Titanic Beach.

Initial reports from local media sources, including the Telegram channel Baza, indicated that the death toll may have risen to six, with nine others suffering critical injuries. However, the Russian diplomats did not confirm these higher figures, stating that the fate of several tourists remains unclear.

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation. Preliminary assessments suggest that the submersible may have collided with a reef, leading to a cabin depressurization. Eyewitness accounts and feedback from previous passengers raised concerns about the vessel's condition, mentioning issues such as malfunctioning ventilation and questionable safety practices by the crew.

Passengers reportedly paid around 7,000 rubles (approximately 70 euros) for adult tickets, while children's tickets were half the price, attracting about 15 children on board. The excursion, which has been a regular offering for tourists, was intended to showcase the vibrant marine life of the Red Sea.

As the investigation unfolds, the Russian consulate is actively monitoring the situation, providing assistance to the affected families and ensuring that those rescued receive the necessary medical care. The incident has sparked concerns about the safety protocols employed during such underwater excursions, with calls for stricter regulations in the tourism sector.

This tragic event recalls previous maritime accidents involving tourists, highlighting the risks associated with underwater exploration. In November 2024, a yacht sank near Marsa Alam, and in July, a fishing vessel capsized near the Falkland Islands, emphasizing the need for enhanced safety measures in the tourism industry.

As the situation develops, authorities in Egypt and Russia are working together to clarify the circumstances surrounding the accident, and further updates are expected as investigations continue.
