Kang was born in 1989 and began his professional career after being selected by Pohang Steelers in the 2009 K-League draft. He made an immediate impact on the field, playing for Pohang for three years before transferring to Busan I-Park in 2012. Over his career, he represented several clubs, including Gyeongju Citizen Football Club, Bucheon FC, Gangwon FC, Incheon United, Gimpo FC, Gangneung Citizen Football Club, and Cheonan City Football Club, ultimately retiring at the end of the 2022 season.
In February 2025, Kang Ji-yong and his wife appeared on 'Divorce Couple Camp,' where they opened up about their struggles, particularly financial issues that had led to conflicts in their marriage. During the show, he expressed distressing sentiments, stating, "My child dying is my only wish" and "The feeling of wanting to die is too great," which shocked viewers. Despite these struggles, the couple was able to reaffirm their love for each other and reconcile.
Following his retirement from professional soccer, Kang transitioned to working at a chemical manufacturing factory, where he earned approximately 3 million won per month while also coaching soccer on weekends. His life after soccer kept him in the public eye, particularly through his appearance on the reality show.
As news of his passing spread, many were left in disbelief, reflecting on the impact he had made both on and off the field. JTBC, the network that aired 'Divorce Couple Camp,' has stated that they are currently discussing how to handle the broadcast segments featuring Kang Ji-yong and his wife in light of his death.
