Former Idol Manaka Shida Thrives As Top Kyabakura Hostess

Transitioning from the stage to the nightlife, Shida reveals her substantial earnings and personal insights.

Former idol Manaka Shida has taken the entertainment world by surprise with her bold move from being a member of the popular group Keyakizaka46 to becoming one of Tokyo's highest-earning kyabakura hostesses. Shida, who appeared on ABEMA's talk show "Damatte Rarenai Onna-tachi" on December 14, revealed some eye-opening details about her life after idols and her newfound financial success.

Shida shared her thoughts on the shift, confirming, "I'm earning more than ten times what I did as an idol," highlighting just how lucrative life as a hostess can be. Once part of Japan’s famed idol scene, where earnings can be limited and restrictive, Shida's transition marks drastic change. After announcing her career change publicly, she began working at the prestigious Belle Lounge Ginza, where she showcases her unique approach to customer service.

During her time as part of Keyakizaka46, which was known for its hit songs and memorable performances, she earned her place as one of Japan's national idols, even gracing the stage of the NHK Kouhaku Uta Gassen twice. After pausing her idol activities due to health issues, she graduated from the group on November 11, 2018. Reflecting on her decision, she stated, "I wanted to share my story openly because no one else did," emphasizing the need for transparency within the industry.

Although Shida's rise to becoming one of the top hostesses was swift, the role requires more than just charm. Shida engages her clientele with what she describes as "friendly service", which stands apart from the expectations many hold of kyabakura hostesses. Fellow staff and patrons laud her natural charisma and ability to connect. She explained, "It's not about putting on too much of a show—being genuine goes much farther."

Not only has her financial situation improved—Shida also noted her income now exceeds yearly returns of 100 million yen—but her lifestyle has dramatically shifted as well. Rather than keeping her background secret, she has embraced her past with the ease of someone comfortable in their skin. Despite her newfound income, Shida advised fans and viewers, "It's important to remain true to yourself, because the glamour can easily become overwhelming."

Discussing her personal life, Shida expressed her beliefs about relationships. She remarked, "I feel uncomfortable being alone at night," hinting at her desire for companionship but also her current unwillingness to commit to relationships, stating, "I won't get serious with anyone until I turn 30." This sentiment transcends mere personal preference, as it reveals her reflections on her past mistakes and the fresh outlook she has on love and partnership.

Shida's radiant spirit is easily recognizable as she acknowledges her side of life as different from what many might expect. She laughed, recounting nights of revelry where she regularly consumes tequila, "I’ve never been drunk or lost, I can handle my drinks well!" Her fun and festive spirit, coupled with honesty about the challenges of adulthood, resonate with many young professionals striving to find their place.

While life as a kyabakura hostess may come with its challenges, including the social stigma associated with the job, Shida remains focused on enjoying her life and career. The move may have caught many off guard, but for her, it is all about living authentically. "You never know who you might meet along the way—Life is full of surprises!"

Shida’s experience serves as more than just entertainment gossip; it opens avenues for discussion about women's empowerment and personal choice. Her story encompasses the many facets of life beyond what the public eye sees, challenging the stereotype of what it means to transition careers, with the hope of inspiring others to carve their own unique paths.

Through her work, Shida has demonstrated not only resilience but grace as she navigates the realities of life beyond the stage, showing everyone just how much can change when one dares to redefine happiness and success on their own terms.
