Former Fashion Mogul Peter Nygard Receives 11-Year Sentence For Sexual Assault

Court declares Nygard faced pattern of abusing power to assault women over decades as he begins lengthy prison term

Former Fashion Mogul Peter Nygard Receives 11-Year Sentence For Sexual Assault

Peter Nygard, the former Canadian fashion mogul, was sentenced on Monday to 11 years in prison for the sexual assault of four women. This ruling marks the culmination of years of legal battles stemming from accusations dating back several decades.

The 83-year-old, once the head of Nygard International, displayed no remorse as he faced the Toronto courtroom. Judge Robert Goldstein characterized him as a "sexual predator" who exploited his wealth and power to commit assaults against vulnerable women. Prosecutors argued for punitive measures reflecting the severity of his actions, initially seeking a 15-year sentence, which they believed was warranted due to the pattern of behavior exhibited by Nygard during the assaults.

His defense team, on the other hand, pushed for less than two years, citing Nygard's advanced age and his deteriorated health as mitigating factors. Nygard has been incarcerated since his arrest in December 2020, during which time he has often been seen using a wheelchair. His forthcoming prison term will be reduced by more than six years due to the time he has already served, granting him the possibility of parole within two years. He faces multiple upcoming legal challenges, including separate sexual assault cases pending against him in both Montreal and Winnipeg, as well as federal charges from the United States.

During the trial, jurors heard from five women who testified about how Nygard lured them under various pretenses, including job offers, to his company’s office where he assaulted them, often after inviting them to his bedroom suite. Most victims were aged 16 to 28 at the time of their assaults, and the emotional toll of these experiences has been severe. One woman recounted how the assault shattered her sense of trust and left irreversible scars on her mental health.

Shannon Moroney, who has worked as a therapist for several of Nygard's accusers, read victim impact statements outside the courtroom. Many of the victims expressed hope his conviction would inspire others to come forward without fear of retribution from those with social standing and wealth. "This trial was about changing the narrative and empowering survivors of sexual assault," Moroney said.

Nygard's sentencing had been delayed multiple times, partly due to the changes within his legal team after two lawyers resigned over ethical concerns. Despite the mounting evidence against him, Nygard maintained his innocence throughout the process. He has consistently denied the accusations and has continually claimed he was misunderstood.

The investigation revealed Nygard allegedly employed his grand lifestyle and influence to engage with potential victims, offering help or connections within the fashion industry before culminating the meetings with sexual violence. This systemic pattern of assault showcases how wealth can not only facilitate but also enable long-term predatory behavior.

His downfall came when allegations surfaced publicly, leading to investigations and subsequent legal action. The scandal around his actions has reverberated through the fashion world and has drawn attention to the industry's issues surrounding power dynamics and abuse, sparking discussions on the necessity for change.

The former mogul's luxury lifestyle ended abruptly when his corporation filed for bankruptcy following raids on his New York headquarters by U.S. authorities, who were investigating various claims of exploitation and trafficking. Nygard’s allegations extend beyond Canada, with the United States claiming he engaged in narratives of criminal conduct against over 12 victims internationally.

Once valued at more than $700 million, Nygard's empire crumbled under the weight of his legal troubles, leaving behind not just financial ruin but also multiple victims whose lives were fundamentally altered. His legal troubles are far from over, as he faces serious charges of sexual assault and trafficking not only domestically but abroad as well.

Even with the ten-year sentence, advocates believe this is just the beginning of accountability for individuals who misuse power and status to commit heinous acts. The sentiment echoed loudly: victims must be believed, and those who assault should be brought to justice, no matter their fame or fortune.
