Former Emperor Akihito Celebrates His 91st Birthday

Former Emperor Akihito reflects on peace and family during his birthday celebration.

Japan’s beloved former Emperor Akihito marked his 91st birthday on December 23, 2024, continuing to engage with his cherished lifelong research and family responsibilities. This milestone reflects not only his personal achievements but also his enduring contributions to Japan’s cultural and historical narrative.

Akihito, who abdicated the Chrysanthemum throne back in 2019, now carries the title of Emperor Emeritus. Following his abdication, he has taken on a quieter life focused on familial bonds and personal interests. His day-to-day activities involve researching the classification of Japanese freshwater goby fish—an area he has passionately dedicated himself to over the years.

On his birthday, he was expected to celebrate with relatives and the members of the imperial family, which included greetings from his son, current Emperor Naruhito, and daughter-in-law, Empress Masako, as well as Princess Aiko and Crown Prince Fumihito.

Akihito has particularly focused on caring for his 90-year-old wife, former Empress Michiko, who is currently recovering from surgery for her broken leg sustained last October. Their shared time includes reading newspapers and watching television, which Akihito often does during mealtimes. This routine allows him to remain informed about current events both domestically and internationally.

Notably, this year's celebration was overshadowed by Akihito's deep concern for the victims of recent calamities, such as the devastating New Year earthquake and severe autumn rains impacting Japan's Noto Peninsula. His compassionate nature as emperor previously earned him admiration as he often expressed sorrow for natural disasters affecting his people.

Further cementing his legacy, Akihito continues to reflect on Japan’s wartime history. Not one to shy away from the somber realities of the past, he maintains observances of silence on significant anniversaries tied to World War II, like the end of the Battle of Okinawa and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He remarked, "I think it is important to share the misfortunes suffered by the Okinawan residents in the war," emphasizing his continued connection to these historical events.

His daily life remains deeply interconnected with these memories; Palace officials noted, “There have been no major changes in his health.” While diagnosed with heart complications last year, Akihito has managed to maintain stability through diligent medication and lifestyle adjustments, allowing him to pursue his studies.

The former emperor's commitment to education—specifically related to goby fish—persists as he spends considerable time at the palace biology lab, concentrating on the classification and ecology of two specific goby species. This research not only fulfills his scientific curiosity but also remains integral to his identity beyond the throne.

Akihito's engagement with literature also involves reading passages from significant texts concerning past wars with his wife. Currently, they are reading "Senso to Okinawa" (The War and Okinawa), which highlights the experiences of those who lived through pivotal moments of Japan's history, emphasizing his desire to keep these memories alive.

Akihito’s reign was notable for breaking with tradition and fostering closer ties with the Japanese people, instilling feelings of compassion and shared grief rather than mere ceremonial duties. His dedication to acknowledging past hardships has cultivated his reputation as a unifying figure within Japan.

Despite no longer holding official power, Akihito’s legacy remains influential, illustrating his lifelong commitment to peace, familial care, and scientific exploration. The blend of historical reflection, personal care for his wife, and dedication to scientific pursuits paints the picture of a man who honors his past and engages proactively with the present. On this significant birthday, the quiet yet impactful life he leads serves as a reminder of the enduring influence one individual can have on the hearts and minds of many.
