Former Deputy Defense Minister Hospitalized Amid Fraud Charges

Pavel Popov's health deteriorates as he faces serious allegations of embezzlement.

Former Deputy Defense Minister Pavel Popov, who is facing serious fraud charges, was recently hospitalized after being transferred from the Lefortovo pre-trial detention center. Reports from TASS and RIA Novosti on May 8, 2025, indicate that Popov's health has deteriorated, prompting his lawyer, Denis Sagach, to seek medical attention for his client.

According to Sagach, Popov suffers from a "whole series of chronic diseases," one of which has worsened during his time in custody. The lawyer also pointed out that the investigation had previously presented documents to the court asserting that Popov did not have any significant health issues and that his detention was not considered dangerous to his well-being. However, TASS has reported that before his arrest, Popov had already been diagnosed with several health concerns, including obesity, hypertension, heart issues, and high blood sugar.

Pavel Popov, who was once part of Sergei Shoigu's team, began his military career after graduating from the Frunze Military Academy in 1990. Over the years, he held various positions within the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the Ministry of Defense. However, his career took a downturn when he was dismissed from his post as Deputy Minister of Defense on June 17, 2024, following allegations of fraud.

The charges against Popov are serious, as he is accused of being part of an organized group that allegedly embezzled 30 million rubles intended to support the activities of the Military-Patriotic Park "Patriot." Alongside him, two other officials—Vladimir Shesterov, the deputy head of the Main Directorate of Innovative Development of the Ministry of Defense, and Vyacheslav Akhmedov, the director of the "Patriot" park—were implicated in the scheme. Both Shesterov and Akhmedov were detained as part of the same criminal case and have reportedly confessed to their involvement.

As the investigation unfolds, the spotlight remains on Popov, who continues to deny any wrongdoing. His legal team is likely to argue that his health issues should be taken into consideration as the case progresses.
