Former Bangladesh Captain Tamim Iqbal Hospitalized After Heart Attack

The cricketing icon faced a massive heart attack during a domestic match, prompting a swift medical response and widespread concern.

Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal was admitted to the hospital on March 24, 2025, after suffering a heart attack during a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match. The 36-year-old cricketer felt discomfort in his chest while fielding for Mohammedan Sporting Club against Shinepukur Cricket Club in the tournament.

According to reports, the incident occurred during the first innings of the 50-over match. As Tamim's condition deteriorated, arrangements were initially made for a helicopter transfer; however, it was deemed unsafe to airlift him from the BKSP ground in Savar. Consequently, he was transported to Fazilatunnesa Hospital.

After receiving initial medical assistance, he underwent a series of tests where doctors identified a blockage in his heart. Following this, he was transferred to KPJ Hospital and Nursing College, where doctors performed an angiogram on him and placed him under close observation in the coronary care unit. Reports stated that doctors have initiated procedures for potential surgical intervention.

"We are very thankful to all the medics and specialists for their swift actions in this critical situation. The outpouring of concern for Tamim reflects how much he is loved and appreciated by the nation," said Faruque Ahmed, the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), who visited Tamim after canceling a scheduled board meeting.

He continued, affirming, "The BCB is closely monitoring his health and continues to remain in contact with the hospital's medical team. The board is committed to providing every support and assistance to ensure Tamim's swift recovery." Such compassion echoes the sentiments throughout Bangladesh where Tamim has long been a figure of national pride.

For fans, Tamim Iqbal is not just an accomplished cricketer, but an integral part of the country's cricketing narrative. Having played a remarkable 70 Test matches, 243 one-day internationals, and 78 T20 internationals from 2007 to 2023, he has amassed more than 15,000 runs across formats, including an impressive 25 centuries.

His journey has seen ups and downs, including two high-profile retirements. In July 2023, Tamim made a heartfelt exit from international cricket but withdrew his decision just a day later, thanks to the intervention of then-Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Earlier this year, Tamim announced his retirement from international cricket for the second time, in January 2025.

The quick response from medical staff and the ongoing support from both fans and the cricketing community underline the love and respect he has cultivated over his illustrious career. As Bangladesh continues to rally behind Tamim, his recovery remains a matter of significant concern.

Fans are waiting for updates on his health, and many view him as a cornerstone of Bangladeshi cricket history. The cricket community's prayers and well-wishes have been pouring in, leading to a remarkable show of solidarity as they hope for his swift recovery and return to good health.
