Former Alberta NDP Leader Raj Pannu Passes Away At 91

Raj Pannu's impact on the NDP and Alberta's politics remains significant and enduring.

Raj Pannu, former leader of the Alberta New Democratic Party (NDP), has passed away at the age of 91. The news was confirmed by the party on January 30, 2025.

“It is with great sadness we learned of the passing of former Alberta NDP leader Dr. Raj Pannu,” stated Christina Gray, the Alberta NDP house leader, reflecting the somber mood within the party. “A dedicated public servant, Raj had a significant and lasting impact on our party and our province.”

Pannu first entered the political arena as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Edmonton-Strathcona, having been elected in 1997 during what was then a particularly challenging time for the NDP, which had only one other member, Pam Barrett, at the Legislature. He led the party from 2000 until 2004, and his leadership was characterized by unyielding dedication to public service and grassroots activism.

Following his term as leader, he was succeeded by Brian Mason, and Pannu announced his retirement from politics in 2006, proud of the influence his party had achieved within the Alberta Legislature over his ten years of service.

“Today the riding of Edmonton-Strathcona is the beating heart of Alberta’s NDP and Raj’s legacy will forever be valued there and throughout our party,” remarked current NDP leader Naheed Nenshi. This sentiment emphasizes the indelible mark Pannu left on the political fabric of the province.

Pannu was awarded lifetime membership by the NDP in 2001, honoring his enduring dedication and leadership. His campaign for the 2001 Alberta election was particularly notable, as he popularized the slogan “Raj Against the Machine,” cleverly evoking the name of the American rock band Rage Against the Machine to highlight his fight against the prevailing political powers of the time.

“With his slogan, he won our hearts and propelled our movement forward,” said Nenshi, acknowledging Pannu’s inspirational leadership style. Pannu’s legacy is remembered fondly by party members and citizens alike, symbolizing the core values of empathy, integrity, and social justice.

Born in India, Pannu completed his undergraduate studies before immigrated to Canada in 1962. He initially settled in Whitecourt, where he worked as a high school teacher until 1964. Moving to Edmonton, he pursued graduate studies and went on to obtain his PhD in sociology by 1973. Pannu taught at York University for one year before returning to the University of Alberta, where he had a significant academic career lasting 27 years until 1996, after which he earned the title of professor emeritus.

The Alberta NDP has shared their sincerest condolences to Pannu’s family, friends, and all who were touched by his work. “Raj’s lifelong commitment to social justice and equity laid the groundwork for our current fight for these fundamental issues,” stated the NDP Caucus.

While Pannu’s cause of death has not been made public, he leaves behind a legacy not only of political resilience but also of social advocacy, reminding the citizens of Alberta of the importance of voice and representation.

Pannu was much more than just a political figure; he was regarded as both likeable and honest, earning him respect across the political divide. His commitment to his constituents and the province will continue to resonate within the memories of those he fought for and the party he helped shape.

Today, as the NDP moves forward, they reflect on Pannu’s contributions to their history, ready to carry on the mission he was so passionate about. The significance of his efforts during his time cannot be overstated, as they laid the foundation for the future political endeavors of the party.
