Ford Recalls Over 148,000 Vehicles Due To Brake Issues

The automaker addresses safety concerns with significant recalls for F-150, Expedition, and Explorer models.

Ford Motor Company has announced a significant recall affecting more than 148,000 trucks and SUVs due to safety concerns related to braking performance. This announcement, made by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on April 11, 2025, highlights the automaker's commitment to addressing potential safety issues proactively.

The largest of the two recalls involves 123,611 vehicles, specifically certain 2017–2018 Ford F-150, Expedition, and Lincoln Navigator models equipped with 3.5L EcoBoost engines. The problem arises from a potential fluid leak in the brake master cylinder, which could allow brake fluid to seep into the brake booster. This leak can significantly reduce brake function to the front wheels, thereby extending stopping distances and increasing the risk of a crash. According to the recall report, "A substantial loss of brake fluid can reduce brake function to the front wheels. Reduced brake function in the front wheels can extend stopping distance, increasing the risk of a crash."

To rectify the situation, Ford will replace the affected brake master cylinder and, if necessary, the brake booster at no charge to the vehicle owners. Notifications to affected owners are expected to begin on April 28, 2025, with instructions to take their vehicles to authorized Ford or Lincoln dealers for the necessary repairs.

The second recall involves 24,655 of the 2025 Ford Explorer SUVs. This issue is linked to the powertrain control module (PCM), which may reset while driving. Such a reset could damage the vehicle’s park system or lead to an engine stall, posing a significant safety risk. Ford has assured that dealerships will address this software issue free of charge, and affected owners will receive notification letters by May 26, 2025.

"Checking for recalls on your vehicle could save your loved ones’ lives or your own," stated NHTSA Chief Counsel Peter Simshauser in a recent news release. He emphasized the importance of vehicle safety and encouraged owners to take the time during spring cleaning to check for any open recalls and complete necessary repairs as soon as possible.

In 2024 alone, NHTSA reported that 1,073 safety recalls affected more than 35 million vehicles and pieces of equipment, including tires and car seats. Of these, more than 29 million were vehicle recalls, underscoring the critical need for consumers to stay informed about vehicle safety issues.

Ford's recalls are not isolated incidents but part of a broader trend in the automotive industry, where manufacturers are increasingly vigilant about potential safety hazards. The company has stated that it is unaware of any accidents or injuries resulting from the brake issues identified in the recalls, but it remains committed to ensuring the safety of its customers.

In recent years, the automotive industry has faced scrutiny over safety practices, with recalls becoming more frequent as manufacturers work to enhance safety measures and respond to consumer concerns. Ford's proactive approach in addressing these issues reflects a growing awareness of the need for transparency and accountability in vehicle safety.

As the recall process unfolds, Ford encourages vehicle owners to remain vigilant about their vehicle's performance and to report any irregularities to their local dealerships. The automaker's commitment to customer safety is evident in its willingness to address these issues head-on and provide necessary repairs without charge.

With the recall affecting a substantial number of vehicles, Ford is expected to ramp up its communication efforts to ensure that all affected owners are informed and can take appropriate action. This includes not only sending out notification letters but also utilizing digital platforms and social media to reach a wider audience.

In summary, Ford's recent recall announcement demonstrates the company's dedication to vehicle safety and consumer protection. As more vehicles are recalled, it serves as a reminder for all vehicle owners to stay informed about their vehicle's safety status and to take action when necessary. The importance of vehicle recalls cannot be overstated, as they play a crucial role in preventing accidents and ensuring the safety of drivers and passengers alike.

As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, the emphasis on safety and reliability remains paramount. Ford's actions in recalling these vehicles are a testament to the company's commitment to maintaining high safety standards and protecting its customers.
