FORT WALTON BEACH — Governor Ron DeSantis has announced the awarding of $2.1 million to bolster military-supporting infrastructure across Florida, focusing primarily on the needs of military communities, including several organizations located in Northwest Florida. This initiative marks another step taken by the governor toward enhancing Florida’s standing as one of the most military-friendly states in the nation.
The funding is part of the Defense Reinvestment Grant Program, which is intended to assist infrastructure projects and stimulate economic growth within military communities. “Florida is committed to investing in our military's capacity and in military communities,” DeSantis remarked. “These funds continue my mission of making Florida the most military-friendly and veteran-friendly state in the nation.”
Out of the total allocation of $2.1 million, the One Okaloosa Economic Development Council is set to receive $122,500. This funding aims to implement strategies to bolster and protect local military installations, missions, and ranges. The emphasis is not only on maintaining existing military operations but also diversifying the economy, particularly toward Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) industries. According to the release, this shift is key for fostering job growth and economic resilience.
Bay County is also benefiting from this funding, as the Bay Defense Alliance has been awarded $90,530. The intention here is to effectively leverage volunteer talents and community partnerships to strengthen existing missions and explore opportunities for future defense projects. The funding for Bay County also includes $220,000 earmarked for developing a comprehensive area plan for the Barefoot Palms property situated near Naval Support Activity Panama City.
“Under the leadership of Governor DeSantis, Florida is continuing to support significant projects pivotal to enhancing military readiness,” stated Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly. “These awards will benefit communities statewide, building upon previous investments and strengthening the connection between our defense communities and military installations.”
Since taking office, Governor DeSantis has consistently highlighted the importance of investing in Florida's military infrastructure, ensuring local military sites and communities receive the resources necessary for growth and success. The governor’s recent awards represent Florida's steadfast commitment to preserving military preparedness and providing economic opportunities for families and communities affiliated with the armed forces.
This announcement is just the latest development as Florida's military funding initiatives continue to thrive. The strategic investment could redefine the support framework for military bases and installations across the state, enabling them to fulfill their roles efficiently and effectively.
Overall, with these initiatives led by Governor DeSantis, Florida is taking deliberate steps to not just fortify its military assets, but also to innovate its economic strategies to create lasting benefits for both residents and service members. This progressive approach signals promising developments for the future of military infrastructure and service communities within the state.
