Florida Man Captured After TikTok Tip

Benjamin Williams arrested following viewer's report on social media about his murder charge

A Florida man accused of murder has been captured after a TikTok video led to a viewer tipping off the police about the man’s whereabouts.

Back in 2021, Benjamin Robert Williams allegedly shot and killed his ex-girlfriend Joana Peca at a cemetery near St. Petersburg, Florida, right before her children. The shocking incident unfolded when Williams reportedly convinced Peca to meet him to see their infant son. Upon her arrival, Williams is said to have shot her multiple times.

Immediately after the tragedy, Williams fled, and the St. Petersburg police launched an extensive manhunt, searching for him for three and a half years without success.

That is until late November 2024, when a TikTok post resurfaced, displaying details of the local news coverage on the case. The caption for the TikTok video declared, "Manhunt for man who killed girlfriend."
The story captivated viewers, prompting one individual to inform the St. Petersburg Police Department about Williams’ possible location, now believed to be Mexico.

"Thanks to the dedication of St. Petersburg Police detectives and the invaluable support of the U.S. Marshals and the ATF, we managed to capture a dangerous criminal, bringing some justice to the victim’s family," said St. Petersburg Police Chief Anthony Hollaway. "While nothing can restore the life of a beloved daughter and mother to two young children, we hope this provides them some long-overdue peace and closure."

The arrest followed the viewer's tip, which led to the U.S. Marshals Service’s involvement. They acted swiftly to bring Williams back to the U.S., where he has since been charged with first-degree murder and two counts of child abuse.

Williams had been on the run ever since the tragic day when he allegedly killed Peca, and his case extended beyond just local efforts. His face also appeared on national television during the show "In Pursuit with John Walsh" back in 2022, where he was featured as wanted.

Police had offered up to $25,000 for information leading to his capture, underscoring the seriousness of the situation surrounding Williams, who was labeled as potentially dangerous. Despite these efforts, he remained elusive for years, even as authorities sought leads and used various platforms to raise awareness about his case.

This isn’t the first time TikTok has played a role in apprehending suspects. Earlier this year, another TikTok user known as Mr. Prada was captured after users identified him as being linked to the death of 69-year-old William Nicholas Abraham, following the circulation of his images linked to the case.

The emergence of social media platforms like TikTok as tools for crime-fighting raises various discussions about the role of technology and public participation in law enforcement. What we witness is rather intriguing—the blending of everyday social media usage with serious criminal investigations.

TikTok, whose users often engage with viral challenges or participate in trends, has unexpectedly become a channel through which significant information can be shared, sometimes yielding real-world consequences.

While the consequences can be dire, as shown by the events surrounding Williams and his alleged actions, the power of digital communities to come together and assist law enforcement offers a new layer of protection and vigilance. Even during times when traditional methods may have failed, untraditional routes can prevail.

For the victims’ families and others affected by violence, this incident highlights not only the horrors of domestic violence but also the resilient spirit of those rallying for justice—sometimes, against incredible odds.

Now, as Benjamin Williams awaits trial, the police chief emphasizes the closure this might bring to Peca’s family and reflects on the steadfast work put forth by the officers involved. They kept the hope alive for three years, and it was the very community they serve—fueled by modern technology—that finally brought Williams back to face justice.

The story of Benjamin Robert Williams serves as a reminder of the darker sides of relationships and the urgency with which communities must respond to violence, whether through traditional law enforcement or the empowered voices on platforms like TikTok.

Now back behind bars, the challenges surrounding domestic violence and its impacts on families remain pressing concerns. Advocates highlight the need for continued conversations about safety, proper resources, and the importance of community vigilance.

While law enforcement agencies may have their hands tied under certain circumstances, the empowerment of individuals through social platforms shows what can happen when ordinary people engage with issues affecting them directly. Steps must continuously be taken to reduce violence and support at-risk individuals within communities, ensuring tragedies like the one experienced by Peca and her children are not repeated.
