Florida Gators Defeat Auburn To Reach Championship Game

Walter Clayton Jr. shines with 34 points in thrilling Final Four victory

The stage was set for an exhilarating showdown at the Final Four of the 2025 Men’s NCAA Basketball Tournament, and it did not disappoint. In a thrilling clash between SEC rivals, the Florida Gators edged out the Auburn Tigers in a nail-biting contest that ended with a score of 79-73. The victory propels Florida into the national championship game, marking their first appearance in the title match since they captured back-to-back championships in 2006 and 2007.

Walter Clayton Jr. once again proved to be the hero for the Gators, delivering a phenomenal performance with 34 points. His ability to deliver in clutch moments was on full display as he made critical shots that kept Florida in the game when the odds seemed stacked against them. "We're just all together, on the court and off the court," Clayton reflected after the game, highlighting the team's chemistry that has been pivotal throughout the tournament.

The game started with both teams showcasing their talents, but it was Auburn that initially took control. The Tigers, led by All-American Johni Broome, surged ahead to an eight-point lead at halftime, with Broome contributing 12 points in the first half. However, Florida wasn't ready to back down. Despite trailing by as many as nine points early in the second half, the Gators rallied, thanks in large part to Clayton's relentless scoring.

Florida’s coach Todd Golden, who has been at the helm since 2021, expressed pride in his team’s resilience. "Auburn had us on our heels in the first half, but we came out with a great start and we didn't look back," he said. The Gators executed a series of plays that showcased their tenacity and skill, ultimately tying the game and setting the stage for a thrilling finish.

Clayton's performance was historic; he became the first player since Larry Bird in 1979 to record back-to-back 30-point games in the Elite Eight and national semifinals. He was efficient as well, shooting 11 of 18 from the field, including 5 of 8 from beyond the arc, and making all seven of his free throws. His late-game heroics included a crucial three-point play that sealed the victory for Florida.

Alijah Martin, another key player for the Gators, also stepped up in the second half, contributing 17 points and energizing the Florida fans in the Alamodome with his highlight-worthy plays. Martin, who has been a reliable sidekick to Clayton throughout the season, emphasized the importance of their teamwork, stating, "He has done it all year for us, in big moments."

On the other side, Broome struggled in the second half, managing only three points on four shots after halftime, finishing the game with 15 points and seven rebounds. His frustrations were evident as he missed two crucial free throws with just over two minutes left that could have narrowed Florida's lead to just one point. Broome, who had been dealing with a lingering elbow injury, found it difficult to maintain his usual dominance as the game progressed.

The emotional toll of the game was palpable for Auburn. Head coach Bruce Pearl witnessed his team’s dreams slip away as they were unable to maintain their early lead. Pearl had noted before the game that Clayton had been the best guard on the floor every night, and on this night, that statement rang true as Clayton outshined his opponents.

As the final seconds ticked away, Clayton secured the victory by tipping a loose ball, ensuring the Gators would advance. His teammates celebrated around him, with Martin beaming as they embraced after the win. The Gators now look ahead to the national championship game with hopes of adding another title to their storied history.

Looking forward, Florida will face the winner of the nightcap game between Houston and Duke. Houston is vying for its first national championship, while Duke seeks its first title since 2015. The anticipation builds as fans eagerly await the matchup, which promises to be another thrilling chapter in this year’s tournament.

As the dust settles from this intense semifinal, one thing is clear: Walter Clayton Jr. has solidified his status as a clutch performer, and the Gators are ready to fight for their place in history.
