The University of Florida has officially closed its Title IX investigation involving men’s basketball coach Todd Golden, announcing on Monday, January 27, 2025, the findings of the lengthy probe conducted over the past four months. The university's investigation, prompted by allegations from multiple women, including students, found no evidence to substantiate claims against Golden, which included sexual harassment, sexual exploitation, and stalking.
Florida's spokesperson, Steve Orlando, stated, "The University of Florida takes these matters seriously and works deliberately to uphold due process for everyone." The comprehensive investigation included interviews with dozens of individuals and examined the allegations critically. The conclusion drawn was clear: “After a thorough investigation, the University of Florida has found no evidence of Title IX violations by Todd Golden. The Title IX office has closed its investigation,” he added.
Golden himself responded positively to the announcement, expressing gratitude for the support he had received throughout the investigation period. “The last several months have been challenging for my family and me as this process dragged on,” Golden stated. “We asked the public to allow the process to come to its conclusion and not rush to judgment based on allegations. The University Athletic Association (UAA) and many at the university have been tremendously supportive, and my family and I are extremely grateful.”
The allegations against Golden first surfaced through the student newspaper, The Independent Florida Alligator, on November 1, 2024. The complaints detailed instances of unwanted sexual advances made via social media, including Instagram, and accusations of Golden taking photographs of women without consent and sending lewd images of himself. The initial complaint was filed on September 27, 2024.
During the investigation, which unfolded publicly, Golden continued to coach the Gators, focusing on preserving the integrity of his season during this tumultuous time. Before the investigation's conclusion, he had urged the public to let due process take its course, reflecting on the necessity of confidentiality and respect for all parties involved.
Golden’s attorney, William Shepherd, criticized the manner of how the allegations and the investigation had been handled publicly. “Coach Golden and I have respected the process throughout, actively engaging with the university,” Shepherd emphasized. “Unfortunately, many did not honor this process, instead seeking to target Coach Golden personally, leaking confidential information to the media and attempting to intimidate him through questionable tactics.”
Shepherd's strong condemnation of the actions surrounding the investigation suggested there were those who seemed more interested in advancing their own agenda rather than upholding the integrity of the inquiry. "Some leaked confidential material to the media; falsely posed as UF lawyers to intimidate; harassed university students and their families to generate false narratives; and, overall, harassed my client and his supporters," he explained.
Despite the challenges posed by these serious allegations, the basketball coach remained focused on the season. The Gators started strong, with an impressive 18-2 record, and were ranked No. 5 nationally at the time of the investigation's closure. Golden is celebrated for his coaching prowess, leading the program after stints at the University of San Francisco where he secured NCAA tournament appearances. The university assured the community of its commitment to confidentiality and integrity throughout the investigative process.
While Coach Golden's case has come to resolution, another investigation related to the Florida basketball staff remains open. Assistant coach Taurean Green faces separate allegations of sexual assault, reported earlier this month. The complaints against Green state he allegedly engaged in inappropriate physical contact with an athletic department employee earlier this year. At present, Green continues to perform his coaching responsibilities.
The stark dichotomy of the two situations highlights the challenges facing the Florida athletic program as it works to manage the fallout from serious allegations against its staff. It remains to be seen how the conclusion of Golden’s investigation will impact the program moving forward, especially as they are poised for postseason play.
Golden has reaffirmed his commitment to focusing on the season now free from the burdens of the investigation. "Now, it's time to move forward," he declared, focusing on the continuing support from fans and the university community. "I appreciate the support I've received from many at the University and across the country."
With the investigation concluded, he looks to keep his team engaged and competitive as they chase their goal of postseason success. The university’s recent statement reaffirmed their dedication to maintaining high standards and integrity within their athletics program, pushing forward as the Gators compete. Coach Golden's focus now lies solely on helping his team thrive, emphasizing the need for unity and perseverance as the NCAA season progresses.
