Flood Relief Efforts Surge Across Northern Thailand

Krungthai Bank, sports groups, and volunteers mobilize to aid thousands impacted by widespread flooding in more than ten provinces.

Thailand’s northern provinces are grappling with one of the most severe flood crises in recent memory, with tens of thousands of residents affected across more than 10 provinces. In the wake of torrential rains and flash floods, a sweeping wave of relief efforts has surged through the region, drawing together banks, charities, sports associations, and private citizens in a determined response to the disaster.

According to the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), over 50,000 people have been impacted by the floods as of September 15, 2025. The deluge, brought on by the influence of tropical storm Nong Fa, has left entire villages submerged, homes and livelihoods damaged, and vulnerable populations in urgent need of support. While the government has mobilized emergency resources, the scale of the crisis has prompted an outpouring of grassroots and institutional aid.

One of the most prominent initiatives comes from Krungthai Bank, which on September 15 launched a nationwide donation campaign to assist flood victims in the northern region. The bank’s campaign is designed to provide immediate help to over 500 villages and 1,200 households that have borne the brunt of the disaster. Krungthai Bank executives and staff quickly mobilized, distributing 500 survival kits—each containing rice and dried food—and 1,200 bottles of drinking water to those in need. The bank’s representatives also took the time to listen to the concerns of flood victims and offer words of encouragement, hoping to lift spirits as communities work to recover.

"Krungthai Bank recognizes the hardship faced by people affected by sudden flooding from the influence of tropical storm Nong Fa," a bank spokesperson stated. "We are committed to providing urgent assistance and supporting our customers and the broader public during this crisis." The campaign encourages the public to contribute to flood relief efforts, making it easy to donate via QR Code E-Donation through Krungthai Bank’s platform. Donors can also transfer funds directly to the Friends in Need (of ‘Pa’) Volunteers Foundation of the Thai Red Cross Society, with all donations automatically eligible for tax deductions.

Krungthai Bank’s support extends beyond immediate aid. The institution has rolled out relief measures for individual and SME customers, including interest rate reductions, lower loan installment payments, and liquidity support for daily living expenses and property repairs. Customers interested in these support programs can contact any Krungthai Bank branch nationwide until the end of 2025, or call the Krungthai Contact Center for more information. These steps are meant to ease the financial burden on flood-hit families and businesses as they navigate the long road to recovery.

But banks aren’t the only ones stepping up. The spirit of volunteerism has swept through the country, with organizations like the Jet Ski Association of Thailand leading the charge in some of the hardest-hit areas. Under the leadership of its president, Police General Dechnarong Sutthichanbancha—affectionately known as "Big Piak"—the association has mobilized a fleet of more than 10 jet skis and a dedicated team of volunteer athletes to deliver aid to residents in the remote, inundated fields of Phak Hai district, Ayutthaya, and surrounding communities.

The operation is the result of close coordination with the Royal Volunteer Center, which was alerted by the Phak Hai district chief to the worsening situation. Many of the affected areas are rural and isolated, with bedridden patients unable to evacuate and supplies of food and medicine running dangerously low. The Jet Ski Association’s volunteers, all seasoned athletes, have responded with enthusiasm and resolve. Notable team members include Orapan Theeraphatpanich, Kasidit Theerabratip, Sombat Niamphang, Jakkrit Hakhao, Chatchawan Thanomthong, Sunthorn Thiaoyu, and world champion Pittipong Kiatkamolkul. Their efforts have brought vital relief to communities that might otherwise be unreachable by conventional means.

"The Royal Volunteer Center recognized the capabilities of our jet ski volunteer athletes, who have experience responding to floods in northern provinces like Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Phrae, and Nan," Big Piak explained to Khaosod. "They asked for our help, and our team was eager to support the mission. We checked with our volunteers, and the same dedicated group agreed to deploy immediately. Even though our athletes are in the midst of training for the upcoming SEA Games, they’re always willing to make time to help people in need. For us, serving the public never takes a back seat."

Private sector support has also played a crucial role. Proud Group, led by Suwat Liptapanlop, contributed 50,000 baht to the Jet Ski Association for the purchase of rice and dried food to be distributed to flood victims in Phak Hai and nearby districts. This partnership between sports associations and business leaders exemplifies the collaborative spirit that has defined the flood response.

Relief efforts have not been limited to Ayutthaya. The jet ski volunteers have previously assisted in flood-stricken areas in the north and supported military operations along the Thai-Cambodian border, earning recognition from the Civil Affairs Department of the Royal Thai Armed Forces. Their commitment has been unwavering, whether navigating treacherous floodwaters or lending a hand in times of conflict.

Meanwhile, the Thai Red Cross Society and the Friends in Need (of ‘Pa’) Volunteers Foundation have joined forces with Krungthai Bank to facilitate donations and ensure that aid reaches those most in need. With the help of technology, the process is streamlined—donors can scan a QR code via any banking app, and contributions are immediately routed to the foundation for distribution. Detailed instructions and updates are available on Krungthai Bank’s website, reflecting the transparency and accountability that donors expect.

As the crisis unfolds, the scale of the response underscores both the severity of the flooding and the resilience of Thai society. From financial institutions and sports organizations to local volunteers and private companies, a broad coalition is working tirelessly to alleviate suffering and restore a sense of normalcy. Relief supplies—food, water, medicine, and other essentials—are being dispatched to affected areas on a rolling basis, with authorities and volunteers coordinating efforts to maximize impact.

For those wishing to contribute, Krungthai Bank and its partners have made it as simple as possible. Whether donating online, through a QR code, or at a local branch, every baht goes toward helping families rebuild their lives. As the monsoon season continues and the threat of further flooding looms, the need for sustained support remains urgent.

Amid the devastation, stories of solidarity and sacrifice abound. Volunteers like the jet ski athletes put aside personal commitments to serve their communities, while ordinary citizens dig deep to offer what they can. It’s a testament to the enduring strength of the Thai people—and a reminder that, even in the darkest moments, hope and compassion can light the way forward.
