Manada Hakkou, based out of Onomichi City, is set to send the first-ever space food certified by JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) aboard the International Space Station (ISS). This milestone marks not only the company's remarkable achievement but also the enhancement of astronaut dietary options during extended missions in space. The product, known as "Manada Enzyme for Space Use," received its certification on November 2023, making it the first of its kind from Hiroshima Prefecture.

The specially formulated space food is presented in paste form, allowing it to be consumed without the risk of spillage—a common concern for food eaten in microgravity conditions. The vacuum-sealed packaging ensures the preservation and safety of the food during its time aboard the spacecraft.

President of Manada Hakkou, Yoshiki Matsuura, visited Hiroshima Governor Yuuzaki to announce this breakthrough and underscored its purpose, stating, “宇宙飛行士の皆さんに常に健康でいていただける、維持していただけるのがまず大前提。ここでご報告できることが1つの成果,” which translates to, "It is fundamental to keep astronauts healthy, and the ability to report this achievement is one of our successes." His remarks highlighted the importance of ensuring astronauts maintain their health throughout their missions.

Governor Yuuzaki, after tasting the innovative space food, echoed positive sentiments by stating, “いつもの万田発酵ですね。これで元気になってもらって,” which means, "This is the usual Manada Hakkou flavor; I hope this will help them stay energized." His comments reinforced the confidence within the local government and the community invested in this venture.

The launch of the spacecraft carrying the space food is planned for late March 2024, projected to be delivered alongside astronaut Takuyu Ohnishi, who will utilize the product during his extended stay aboard the ISS. This first JAXA-approved product from the region signifies significant strides not only for the local economy but also for Japan's contribution to global space exploration.

This new development opens the door for future advancements and innovations catered to the health and nutrition of astronauts. With increasing interest in manned missions to Mars and beyond, ensuring the health and wellness of crew members through viable food options is more pivotal than ever.
