First Human Case Of H5 Bird Flu Confirmed

Public health officials urge caution as virus spreads among livestock and animals.

Southern California has confirmed its first human case of H5 bird flu, sparking health concerns amid rising cases of the virus seen among livestock and wildlife. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced the case on Monday, describing the infected individual, who is an adult, as having been exposed to infected livestock at their workplace.

Details revealed by public health officials indicate the individual experienced mild symptoms and has already been treated with antivirals. They are reportedly recovering at home. According to the health department, “The overall risk of H5 bird flu to the public remains low.” This reassurance is underscored by the fact there’s currently no evidence indicating the virus spreads from person to person.

Muntu Davis, the Los Angeles County Health officer, emphasized the risk associated with the virus: “People rarely get bird flu, but those who interact with infected livestock or wildlife have a greater risk of infection.” This sentiment is echoed by the department's recommendations for the public to avoid unprotected contact with sick or dead animals, including cows and poultry. They also advised against consuming raw or undercooked animal products, such as raw milk.

California Governor Gavin Newsom took decisive action just days prior, proclaiming a state of emergency on December 18. This declaration aims to streamline resource allocation effectively as cases of bird flu began to emerge across the state, particularly among dairy cows. Approximately two-thirds of California’s dairy farms have experienced infected livestock, including several dairy operations located within Southern California. This is significant since California accounts for half of the bird flu cases reported nationwide.

Health officials also noted with concern the identification of bird flu among two cats in Santa Barbara County. The cats developed severe neurological illness after contracting the flu, necessitating investigations to trace the source of these infections. Though there has not been verified transmission of the virus from these cats to humans, officials stress heightened caution among individuals who may come across wild birds or infected animals.

Symptoms of H5N1 bird flu in humans are similar to other respiratory illnesses and may include eye redness or discharge, fever, cough, difficulty breathing, sore throat, muscle aches, diarrhea, and vomiting. California health authorities reiterate the need for individuals who engage closely with animals to remain vigilant and to report symptoms immediately.

Despite past reports emphasizing the low likelihood of humans contracting the virus, public health leaders remind the community of the importance of basic precautions. “This case reminds us to take basic precautions to prevent being exposed,” Davis said, highlighting the need for individuals who potentially encountered infected animals to seek care and alert their health providers without delay.

Preventive measures are currently recommended, such as avoiding raw dairy products and handling sick or dead animals carefully. Investigators are actively monitoring those who may have come close to the infected individual as part of their containment strategy. They have been offered testing, personal protective equipment, and access to antiviral prophylaxis.

Overall, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health maintains public reassurance, clarifying no evidence of local cat-to-cat, cat-to-human, or human-to-human transmission of H5 bird flu has been present. The situation remains closely monitored, with authorities urging appropriate public health practices.

For those who work around livestock, poultry, or wildlife, increased caution is advised. The point remains clear—while there is no need for public alarm, staying informed and prepared is imperative. Community members are encouraged to follow best practices to keep both themselves and their pets safe.

To report sick or dead animals, or for any more information about the current H5 bird flu situation, residents can reach out to local health departments or designated state hotlines.
