Fireworks Scare Baby Red Panda Leading To Tragic Death

Edinburgh Zoo calls for tighter regulations as fireworks cause distress to wildlife after baby panda chokes on vomit

A tragic incident at Edinburgh Zoo has drawn attention to the impacts of fireworks on wildlife, as it has been reported 3-month-old baby red panda Roxie died after becoming frightened by nearby fireworks during Bonfire Night celebrations. The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), which oversees the zoo, has linked the young panda's death to the distress caused by the loud noises from the fireworks set off across the city.

Roxie, born at the zoo on July 3rd, faced the loss of her mother, Ginger, just five days before her own untimely demise. Despite the emotional trauma of her mother's passing, Roxie had been receiving specialist care and had shown signs of progressing well until fireworks triggered her distress. Vets believe she choked on her own vomit due to the overwhelming fear caused by the noise.

Ben Supple, deputy chief executive of RZSS, stated, "Roxie had access to her den, but the frightening noises seem to have been too much for her." He emphasized the detrimental effects fireworks can have on animals, not just at the zoo but also among domestic pets and farm animals. This incident highlights the potential dangers posed by fireworks, which have been known to cause stress reactions leading to tragic outcomes like Roxie's.

Following this incident, there has been increased advocacy for tighter restrictions on fireworks. The RZSS is joining the call from animal welfare organizations to impose stricter regulations, potentially banning public sales of fireworks entirely and allowing only organized displays. This effort coincides with the presentation of a petition with over one million signatures delivered to UK government officials, seeking to limit the use of fireworks to designated occasions only, and to reduce maximum sound levels permitted.

The current legislation around fireworks in the UK restricts their use during certain hours, yet exemptions exist for events like Bonfire Night, where fireworks are widely celebrated. Supple noted, “Many of the animals in the zoo will also be disturbed by noises at lower frequencies even if the decibel level is reduced,” indicating the need for broader city-wide restrictions.

Scottish Community Safety Minister Siobhian Brown acknowledged the distress caused to animals by fireworks and mentioned the authority granted to local councils to establish firework control zones, which could effectively limit the use of fireworks to designated areas. She called for collaboration with the UK government to explore what more can be done to address related concerns.

This incident has sparked discussions about animal welfare and the responsibilities of communities during festive events. It raises important questions about the balance between celebration and the well-being of vulnerable wildlife and pets who may be adversely affected by such festivities. The emotional turmoil experienced by animals, particularly those like Roxie who are already facing the trauma of losing their parents, calls for greater awareness and responsibility from fireworks users and local governments alike.

Edinburgh Zoo is not the first to experience such tragedies. Pets and wildlife have been known to suffer severe anxiety and even fatal consequences due to fireworks, prompting many animal rights organizations to advocate for reform. They suggest more humane alternatives for celebrating, such as community events without excessive noise or visual disturbance.

The swift response from local authorities and animal welfare organizations indicates a growing recognition of these issues, aiming to strike an appropriate balance so future celebrations do not come at the expense of animal lives. With the recent loss of Roxie, advocates are hoping for significant legislative changes to prevent similar occurrences and protect vulnerable animals across the UK.
