Firefighters Battle Intense Wildfire In Table Mountain

Community rallies to support firefighting efforts as evacuations continue in affected areas

Firefighters have been battling a raging wildfire that ignited in the Upper Tokai and Silvermine sections of Table Mountain National Park since Friday evening, April 25, 2025. The blaze has intensified over the weekend, prompting evacuations and significant firefighting efforts across the region.

As of Sunday night, April 27, the fire was reported to be creeping down Boyes Drive towards Kalk Bay and Fish Hoek, while on the Ou Kaapse Weg side, it advanced towards Noordhoek. Over 250 firefighters from multiple agencies have been engaged in the fight, working across five active fronts to contain the flames.

City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue spokesperson Jermaine Carelse confirmed that no major flare-ups were reported overnight on Sunday, but he emphasized the ongoing danger posed by hotspots in the area. "Crews remained on the fire line throughout," he stated. Fresh crews were deployed Monday morning to continue the fight.

Despite the efforts, the fire has already consumed approximately 3,000 hectares of vegetation, and authorities are investigating the cause. Early indications suggest that it may have been started deliberately. SANParks spokesperson JP Louw has urged anyone with information to assist in the investigation.

As the fire spread, the city took precautionary measures, evacuating 198 households from the Noordhoek Manor, including 48 frail care residents. Evacuees have been temporarily housed with friends and family or at the Fish Hoek Civic Centre, where health care services are being provided.

Local residents have shown tremendous support for the firefighters, with donations of water, energy drinks, and non-perishable food being encouraged. Donations can be dropped off at the Lakeside Fire Station, and various supermarkets are also facilitating contributions through their delivery apps.

Road closures remain in effect in several areas due to the fire, including Ou Kaapse Weg, Boyes Drive, and Zwaanswyk Road. Authorities are advising motorists to use Chapman’s Peak as an alternative route while the situation remains critical.

As of Monday morning, April 28, aerial resources, including helicopters, have been deployed to assist ground crews in battling hotspots along Constantiaberg and Vlakkenberg. The visibility in some areas has been hampered by fog and heavy smoke, complicating firefighting efforts.

Community members are encouraged to check in on their neighbors, especially the elderly or those who may need assistance. Precautions have been advised for residents with pre-existing health conditions, as smoke inhalation can pose serious health risks.

Firefighters have been praised for their relentless efforts, with many local residents expressing gratitude on social media. JP Smith, a city official, confirmed that drone surveillance has been utilized to monitor fire movements and reposition crews as needed.

As the situation develops, the City of Cape Town has mobilized extensive firefighting resources, including twelve major pumper fire engines, five strike teams, and five water tankers. The urgency of the situation has led to the activation of an Incident Management Team Type 3 to enhance oversight and coordination.

In the face of this crisis, the community has come together, showcasing resilience and solidarity. Local officials are urging residents to adhere to safety directives and stay clear of closed routes to ensure emergency services can operate effectively.

While the flames continue to pose a threat, the collective efforts of firefighters, volunteers, and the community aim to protect lives and property. The situation remains fluid, and authorities are committed to providing ongoing updates as they work tirelessly to contain the fire.

As the investigation into the cause of the fire unfolds, officials are hopeful for a swift resolution. The community’s response, both in terms of support for the firefighters and adherence to safety measures, illustrates the strength and unity of those affected by this devastating event.

In conclusion, the fire in the Upper Tokai and Silvermine sections of Table Mountain National Park serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by wildfires. With the ongoing support of the community and dedicated firefighting efforts, there is hope that this crisis will soon be contained, allowing for recovery and rebuilding in the affected areas.
