Firefighters Battle Blaze At Wisconsin Recycling Facility

A 20-hour firefighting effort extinguishes massive fire near La Crosse

A massive fire at a recycling facility in western Wisconsin has finally been extinguished, following more than 20 hours of intense battle by local firefighters. The blazing inferno broke out at Omaha Track, located on French Island just outside La Crosse, shortly after 1:30 AM on Tuesday. This facility, which specializes in grinding scrap railway ties and other materials, was engulfed by flames and thick smoke, which could be seen billowing for miles around.

Firefighters from multiple departments worked tirelessly throughout the day to bring the fire under control, finally declaring it extinguished around 11 PM. Campbell Fire Chief Nate Melby reported no injuries to personnel or the local community, crediting timely response and favorable winds for preventing evacuations. “It was a very large fire with a lot of fuel,” Chief Melby stated. “The positive aspect is we were able to manage it with other agencies and nobody got hurt.”

The sheer scale of the fire was staggering, with salvaged railway ties and the equivalent of four football fields worth of materials caught up in the blaze. A 30-foot high mound of grinding chips also fueled the flames. Thankfully, the wind shifted to blow smoke away from residential neighborhoods, easing concerns for those living nearby.

Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. This incident is particularly concerning due to the facility’s history; Omaha Track faced a similar fiery disaster back in 2015 when malfunctioning equipment ignited flames, leading to toxic smoke being released and forcing local residents to shelter indoors—a stark reminder of the potential hazards posed by combustible materials.

Meanwhile, Omaha Track's spokesperson, Jillianne Gates, emphasized the company’s focus on safety. “Our priority remains the health of our employees, the safety of the public, and ensuring minimal impact on the environment as we navigate through this investigation,” she remarked. Gates refrained from speculating about the fire's cause, waiting for the investigation’s outcome.

Local residents breathed sighs of relief as the flames finally died down, but the memory of the towering inferno lingers, illustrating the potential dangers associated with facilities like Omaha Track. It’s times like these when communities often rally together, sharing stories of heroism and bravery, as fire crews composed of local volunteers put their lives on the line to protect their neighborhoods.

With the fire now behind them, questions remain about fire safety protocols and the procedures for handling hazardous materials at similar facilities. The prevailing hope is for the investigation to lead to actionable changes, safeguarding against future incidents and ensuring the community's wellbeing. Residents and local leaders continue to express gratitude toward the firefighters whose valiant efforts kept everyone safe during this harrowing emergency.
