A massive fire at a recycling facility in western Wisconsin has finally been extinguished, following more than 20 hours of intense battle by local firefighters. The blazing inferno broke out at Omaha Track, located on French Island just outside La Crosse, shortly after 1:30 AM on Tuesday. This facility, which specializes in grinding scrap railway ties and other materials, was engulfed by flames and thick smoke, which could be seen billowing for miles around.
Firefighters from multiple departments worked tirelessly throughout the day to bring the fire under control, finally declaring it extinguished around 11 PM. Campbell Fire Chief Nate Melby reported no injuries to personnel or the local community, crediting timely response and favorable winds for preventing evacuations. “It was a very large fire with a lot of fuel,” Chief Melby stated. “The positive aspect is we were able to manage it with other agencies and nobody got hurt.”
The sheer scale of the fire was staggering, with salvaged railway ties and the equivalent of four football fields worth of materials caught up in the blaze. A 30-foot high mound of grinding chips also fueled the flames. Thankfully, the wind shifted to blow smoke away from residential neighborhoods, easing concerns for those living nearby.
