GREENLEAF TOWNSHIP — A fire engulfed a shed containing hay bales on Saturday in rural Meeker County, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. The flames drew the attention of firefighters from five different departments, who spent hours on the scene north of Cedar Mills.
According to the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office, the blaze was first observed around 3:41 p.m. on March 22, 2025, when deputies arrived and saw the shed fully engulfed in flames. The fire is believed to have originated from a brush fire that gradually spread to the structure, resulting in significant damage. Most tragically, the shed, along with its contents, was deemed a total loss.
Fire crews from Cosmos, Grove City, Dassel, Lake Lillian, and Hutchinson responded promptly to the emergency. Firefighters worked tirelessly for more than six hours to bring the fire under control, confirming the challenging conditions they faced in battling the flames.
The property, owned by Kaping Farms, was initially at risk as the fire spread rapidly. Fortunately, quick action from the fire departments involved contained the situation before it could escalate further.
In addition to the fire departments, the Litchfield Rescue Squad and Mayo Ambulance also assisted the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office at the scene, ensuring that comprehensive support was available during this emergency situation.
While the loss of the structure and hay bales represents a setback for Kaping Farms, the absence of injuries highlights the efficacy of the response teams who were able to respond quickly and efficiently.
This incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with brush fires, particularly in rural areas where dry conditions can pave the way for rapid fire spread. Authorities continue to urge local residents to exercise caution during dry periods.
As investigations into the origins of the brush fire continue, local fire officials also emphasize the importance of community awareness. Proper management of yard waste and adherence to local burning regulations can be crucial steps in preventing future incidents.
The Meeker County Sheriff’s Office, alongside the fire departments involved, plans to hold awareness programs to educate the public on fire safety and prevention, ensuring that such emergencies are handled with promptness and efficiency in the future.
This fire marks a significant event for the community, given the cooperative efforts of the various fire departments aiding one another. Collaborative responses like these highlight the strength of community support in times of need.
Although this shed was lost, the community can take comfort knowing that all personnel involved acted with urgency, protecting lives and, potentially, further property loss.
As residents of Greenleaf Township begin to recover from this incident, efforts will be taken to ensure that everyone remains vigilant and educated about fire safety going forward. The incident has sparked conversations among locals about enhanced fire prevention strategies for the future.
