FinTech LIVE Singapore 2025 proved to be the ideal platform for discussing the future of fintech, with Paul Gladigau, CTO of Equifax, delivering key insights on how fintech organizations must adapt to remain competitive within the rapidly advancing technology and artificial intelligence (AI) landscapes. Specifically tackling the ways fintechs can leverage AI to improve operation and services, Gladigau addressed the challenges and realities within the AI market this year.
Opening his keynote address with statistics from 2024, Gladigau highlighted findings from TCS indicating a bleak reality where 94% of businesses have attempted to incorporate AI technologies, yet only 12% have witnessed any return on their investment. This significant disparity, he argued, stems from widespread confusion surrounding the exact role of AI within organizations.
To clarify, Gladigau proposed positioning AI solutions along various spectrums: Human-assisted AI, augmented AI, and autonomous AI—each serving specific functions within fintech environments. He categorized human-assisted AI as tools like chatbots, which support human decision-making processes. Augmented AI, such as Co-Pilot and Gemini, enhances human work efficiency, whereas autonomous AI refers to systems operating independently under human guidance.
While these classifications provide a framework, the underlying obstacle to successful AI implementation remains risk management. Gladigau emphasized the necessity of addressing these issues early on, especially among fintech firms dealing with larger financial institutions bound by stringent regulatory frameworks. “Every data model has unintentional bias,” warned Gladigau, urging firms to rigorously assess data integrity, reliability, and security during their AI training processes.
He suggested fintechs benefit from employing existing hyperscale cloud services rather than developing proprietary systems. Aligning with cloud providers whose roadmaps resonate with their AI goals can encourage viable growth and sustainability. By restructuring their approach to AI and placing emphasis on risk management, agencies can drive effective operational changes.
Another notable discussion point was the human factor behind AI adoption. Gladigau highlighted the importance of hiring talent not only based on technical expertise but rather prioritizing traits like curiosity. He relayed how Equifax managed to crowdsource their generative AI project, rallying 17 employees to volunteer their time and efforts with just 36 hours' notice, underlining the idea of fostering cultures of learning over traditional hierarchies.
His discourse undoubtedly set the stage for continued dialogue at FinTech LIVE Singapore as attendees weighed how to transcend AI’s potential pitfalls and translate its vast opportunities for success.
