Finn-Lukas Leun Extends Contract As Mahé Returns To Gummersbach

Anticipation builds for the match against Füchse Berlin as the league sees promising renewals and veteran talent.

The German Handball League is experiencing notable developments as teams prepare for the second half of the season. Among the highlights is the impressive commitment from young players and upcoming key matches, including one set to take place at the historic LANXESS arena.

Finn-Lukas Leun, the 21-year-old left-hander, has extended his contract with the Eulen Ludwigshafen for two years, running until June 30, 2027. Initially arriving on loan from SC DHfK Leipzig, Leun has now fully joined the Eulen, having signed for one year last season. With the departure of established scorer Jannek Klein, Leun has stepped up as the primary choice for the position, showcasing promising talent on the court.

Leun has not only made his mark playing 15 of the 16 games this season, tallying 39 goals from 87 attempts, but he is also driven to improve. "I believe this is the best option for my development. I know the environment here and have met some great people," he explained, highlighting his commitment to the Eulen. His coach, Johannes Wohlrab, praised Leun’s professionalism, saying, "Finn works highly professionally. He is very reflective about his performance." This contract extension is viewed as pivotal for both Leun and the Eulen Ludwigshafen as they aim for stability and growth.

On another front, Kentin Mahé, one of the standout figures of handball, continues to make waves. He has achieved everything possible with the French national team, including titles as World Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist. Mahé’s story is intricately tied to Germany, where he spent most of his career. He has played for various teams, including TSV Bayer Dormagen, VfL Gummersbach, and HSV Hamburg, developing his skills through high-level competition.

Reflecting on his career during the HBL docuseries "Never Stop," Mahé shared his determination and the impact of his father, who also played professionally. "I had no plan B. I only had plan A," recounts Mahé, emphasizing his commitment to becoming the best. Despite the highs, Mahé faced disappointment when he was not nominated for the 2024 Olympics, calling it the "most painful experience" of his handball career.

Now, as Mahé returns to VfL Gummersbach, he brings not only experience but also high expectations. The VfL is set to host the Füchse Berlin, with the match anticipated to be one of the highlights of the season. Coach Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson remarked on the excitement of playing at the LANXESS arena, which can accommodate up to 19,250 fans. With many tickets sold ahead of time, the atmosphere promises to be electric.

VfL Gummersbach has faced challenges recently, struggling to find form with only one win out of four matches this December. Sigurdsson expressed his dissatisfaction with recent performances, noting the team's defensive lapses but recognizing the need for collective improvement. He mentioned missing key players like Mahé who he sees as fundamental to the team's strategy.

The upcoming game against Füchse Berlin is rendered even more significant as it marks Gummersbach’s return to the arena where historic moments have been made. The team is determined to turn their fortunes around and prove their mettle against the formidable opponent, which features top league players.

Each event contributes to the vibrant narrative of the German Handball League, with key players driving their teams forward and the thrill of competition providing excitement for fans. The league continues to thrive as passionate followers remain engaged with the twists and turns of the game.

The growth of talents like Finn-Lukas Leun alongside seasoned professionals like Kentin Mahé showcases the depth of skill present within the league, promising both thrilling matches and inspirational stories as the season progresses.

With training resuming shortly and test matches scheduled, teams are eager to refine their strategies and approaches. VfL Gummersbach, with Mahé’s return, hopes to capitalize on his experience and leadership as they set their eyes on future successes.
