Finnish U20 Team Faces Slovakia Again

Both U20 and women’s teams showcase talent with significant recent achievements.

The Finnish U20 men's ice hockey team has made impressive strides at the World Championships, preparing to face Slovakia in the quarter-finals, similar to last year’s thrilling encounter which ended in favor of Finland.

Finland's young Lions concluded their preliminary round campaigns with dominating performances, culminating with their latest victory against Latvia, where they secured a convincing 3-0 win. This victory confirmed their position as the second seed from Group A. Finnish forward Jesse Nurmi celebrated this upswing, stating, "Pelin osalta alkulohko oli meille nousujohteinen. Meidän on pystyttävä pelaamaan omalla tasollamme, pitämään viisikot tiiviinä ja löytämään samat rytmit," reflecting on the team’s commitment and teamwork as the finals loom. The quarter-final match against Slovakia is set to begin at midnight, as Thursday turns to Friday.

The historical matchup against Slovakia is expected to be intense; last year, Finland triumphed 4-3 after extra time, with Jere Lassila netting the decisive goal. The Finnish side aims to replicate their success, bolstered by extraordinary performances from their goalie, Petteri Rimpinen, who has demonstrated remarkable skill throughout the tournament. Finland has allowed only four goals across three matches since suffering a 0-4 loss to host team Canada.

Laurel Mikkola, head coach of the U20 team, commended the defense, stating, "Se, että pystyy puolustamaan vastustajan nollille, kertoo sitoutumisesta ja heittäytymisestä pelille." His words echo the team’s disciplined approach which has characterized their campaign so far.

Meanwhile, Finnish women's ice hockey is also garnering attention with Ronja Savolainen's recent success. The trusted defender scored her first goal of the PWHL season during Ottawa Charge's match against the Toronto Sceptres, contributing to the team’s narrow 2-1 victory. This significant milestone marks Savolainen's foray back onto the score sheet following her extensive experience playing for the Swedish league side, Luleå.

Now 27, Savolainen had previously registered assists but struggled to find the net, marking this goal as a memorable achievement. After demonstrating her skill at the international and club levels, Savolainen aims to maintain her momentum as she competes against higher stakes. Ottawa currently sits third in the league, trailing Montreal and Minnesota, with another Finnish player, Susanna Tapani of the Boston Fleet, and New York Sirens’ Noora Tulus also finding their footing this season.

The PWHL, having only recently launched, saw last season’s finalists, Boston, struggling this year at the sixth position, which demonstrates the competitive nature of the league. Savolainen's contributions not only highlight her individual prowess but also add to the vibrancy and competitiveness of the Finnish players within the league.

The Finnish ice hockey teams, both male and female, are riding the wave of success as they progress through their respective competitions. With upcoming challenges set for both teams, the excitement continues to build within the community of supporters. Whether it’s the young Lions battling Slovakia for a shot at the medals or Savolainen shining brightly on the North American ice, Finnish ice hockey is poised to make significant strides on multiple fronts.

The convergence of talent and hard work signifies not just events but also the growth of ice hockey prowess within Finland, promising thrilling encounters and potential victories on the international stage for both the U20 and women. The future looks bright for Finnish ice hockey, with fans eagerly anticipating what’s next!
