Finnish TV Faces Backlash Over Programming Changes

Public reacts strongly to the endings of popular shows and the rise of new formats.

The Finnish television audience is feeling the waves of change as notable programs wrap up and newer formats take their place. The farewell to Arto Nyberg's long-standing talk show and the recent victory of contestants on Amazing Race Suomi have sparked significant public discourse around the evolution of TV programming.

Arto Nyberg's show, which aired on Yle for two decades, bid its final goodbye recently. The last episode stirred emotional reactions among viewers, many of whom took to social media to express their discontent with the decision to end the program. This shift, they argue, demonstrates Yle's puzzling programming choices. Social media reactions reveal nearly unanimous disappointment among fans, who describe the show's conclusion as a mistake on Yle's part. One viewer succinctly noted, "Virhe Yleltä"—a mistake by Yle—summarizing the sentiment of many.

Nyberg's gentle and professional hosting style has garnered him accolades over the years, with viewers reminiscing about the insightful discussions and fascinating guests featured on his program. "Ohjelman rauhallinen ja ammattitaitoinen luotsaaminen on toiminut alusta asti" (The calm and professional guidance of the program has worked from the beginning), conveyed one viewer, highlighting the show's impact on Sunday night television.

Following Nyberg's departure, Yle plans to introduce Yle Uutiset Sunnuntai, scheduled to be hosted bi-weekly by Anna Lehmusvesi and Ilkka Lahti. Many wonder if this new format will resonate as deeply with audiences accustomed to Nyberg's engaging conversations. Comments surfaced on platforms like X, where one user lamented, "Iso sääli. Aina mielenkiintoisia vieraita" (Such a pity. Always interesting guests), reflecting the overwhelming nostalgia for the past format.

The viewer response is decidedly mixed, with some expressing frustration about the high production costs of Nyberg's program. Chatter on social media has seen discontent arise: "Sikakallis ja tylsä ohjelma loppuu" (An expensive and boring program is ending). Yet, sentiment reflects more on the show’s legacy than the costs associated with it.

On another note, the recent finale of Amazing Race Suomi crowned its champions, Metti Forssell and Hanna Launonen. Their unexpected victory netted them €30,000, but the road to success was fraught with challenges. Notably, Forssell encountered significant difficulties during her time on the show, particularly when faced with swimming tasks. "En ole ollut ikinä vesipeto, enkä osaa sukeltaa" (I have never been comfortable with water, and I can't swim), Forssell recounted the panic she felt during one of the tasks. Despite her fears, Forssell demonstrated resilience and successfully completed her final challenge.

Despite celebrating their win, Forssell and Launonen found themselves at the center of public scrutiny, with viewers critiquing Forssell’s behavior within the competition. Metti acknowledged this response, stating, "Meille annettiin narratiivi, että olemme ohjelman kisaajat" (We were assigned the narrative of being the program competitors), indicating how the editing shaped viewer perceptions of them. "99 prosenttia tekstistä on ollut päätöntä haukkumista" (99 percent of the feedback has been senseless criticism), she added, underlining the pressures contestants experience on mass-scale programs.

The blending of these narratives highlights the tensions within Finnish television. Where long-standing formats conclude, new initiatives rise. Yet, the shifting sands also encourage viewers to reflect on their relationships with the programming they watch and the personalities they connect with. Amidst the change, one sentiment remains clear: viewers hold deep attachments to the shows and hosts they’ve come to appreciate over the years.

Nyberg himself reacted to the program's cancellation with some surprise and nostalgia. "Tsemppiä Artolle. Toivottavasti palaat taas ruutuun" (Good luck to Arto. I hope you return to the screen), viewers have wished, hoping for his future return. The conversation surrounding Nyberg's conclusion and Forssell's competitive experience reflects broader themes: the evolution of television content, viewer expectations, and the undeniable emotional connections formed through these platforms.
