Finland Boosts Technological Infrastructure With Major Investments

Skanska, Nokia, and the government undertake ambitious projects to lead innovation.

Finland is making remarkable strides in its technological investments, focusing on significant infrastructure upgrades set to bolster its standing as a leader in innovation. With major financial commitments from the government and private sectors, the country aims to advance its technological capabilities significantly over the next few years.

One of the notable projects includes Skanska's investment of EUR 90 million (approximately SEK 1 billion) for the construction of the Firdo office building in Helsinki. This 14-story complex will provide around 15,000 square meters of modern office space, catering to Finland's vibrant commercial sector. Located in Pasila, known for excellent public transport and amenities, Firdo is expected to feature conference rooms, restaurants, gyms, and indoor parking for bicycles, all geared toward creating flexible and sustainable work environments.

The project is set to begin construction in January 2025 with completion anticipated by the second quarter of 2027. Skanska Finland has already secured a thirteen-year lease for approximately 5,500 square meters of the office, representing about 37% of the total building space. This commitment demonstrates strong demand for workspaces adapted to modern needs and eco-friendly standards, as Firdo is aiming for both WELL and LEED Platinum certifications, utilizing geothermal energy for heating and cooling.

Complementing these private investments, the Finnish government has announced plans to spend €250 million on improving the Lumi supercomputer infrastructure, which played host to one of the EU’s seven planned AI Factories. Slated for development at the IT Center for Science in Kajaani, this new facility is expected to provide invaluable support for startups and academics aiming to develop advanced AI systems. The Lumi supercomputer, inaugurated last year, is pivotal to realizing Finland's ambitious goals.

Nokia, another significant player in Finland's tech revolution, recently completed the commercial deployment of its Cloud RAN solution with Finnish telecom provider Elisa, located in Espoo. This successful rollout marked the shift toward more expansive and efficient network operations, aligning with the growing demand for RAN cloudification. Nokia's state-of-the-art solution integrates with existing networks and positions both Nokia and Elisa at the forefront of creating fully cloud-native networks.

Kalle Lehtinen, the Chief Technology Officer at Elisa, acknowledged the importance of this deployment, stating, “This successful Cloud RAN deployment with Nokia is another important step on our cloudification which started with cloudifying the network core and edge, and now includes the radio access network.” The partnership exemplifies the potential of cloud technology to transform telecom operations, enhancing service flexibility and meeting rapidly changing customer needs.

To expand on this, the capabilities introduced by Nokia’s Cloud RAN are set to support significant performance improvements and cost reductions, proving instrumental as operators such as Elisa move toward the anticipated 6G era, expected to be increasingly reliant on cloud technologies. Nokia’s energy-efficient architecture and extensive collaborations with various industry partners enable Elisa to adopt innovative solutions quickly.

Aji Ed, the head of Cloud RAN at Nokia, remarked, “This successful collaboration with Elisa confirms our Cloud RAN solution is ready for commercial deployment.” He highlighted the openness and flexibility of their technology, which allows for new revenue models and monetization options for network operators.

Overall, Finland’s dynamic investments in its technological infrastructure pave the way for sustained economic growth and ecosystem development. These initiatives reflect ambition not only to advance local industry but also to position Finland as a key player on the global stage. If all goes to plan, the combination of these projects will likely yield significant dividends for both the economy and society, promoting innovation, cooperation, and efficiency across sectors.

The transformative measures being implemented continue to make headlines, illustrating Finland's commitment to leading technological advancements and enriching the local and European economies. These developments will enable the country to maintain its competitive edge, backed by substantial investments fostering innovation and sustainability.
