The final season of De Slimste Mens has begun, marking the end of an era for hosts Philip Freriks and Maarten van Rossem. After twelve successful years on air, both will bid farewell to one of the Netherlands' most beloved quiz shows. The 25th season started on December 23, 2024, coinciding with Freriks’ 80th birthday, making it all the more poignant.
Speaking about this significant moment, Freriks expressed, "It's always difficult to determine when to stop." He feels, nonetheless, this is the right moment, highlighting the milestone of 80 years and the show's longevity. He noted: "It’s beautiful to have come this far." Maarten van Rossem echoed similar sentiments, indicating he wouldn’t have minded continuing, but understands Freriks’ decision. “I actually have quite an easy job. Philip must always maintain the mood and pace, standing the entire episode, whereas I can sit,” he humorously remarked.
Reflecting on their dynamic, Freriks explained how they complement each other. “I set up the questions, and Maarten is the one who scores the points. It’s not competitive; we both share the same sense of irony and ability to see the bigger picture.” There’s something genuine about their connection, indicating they share interests, especially political and cultural topics, which has enriched their collaboration.
Concerned about the transition, both presenters recognize the importance of staging their exit properly to facilitate the new beginning for incoming presenter Herman van der Zandt. “He should have the space to choose his own jury member,” van Rossem stated, showing his support for the upcoming changes.
While their presence on the show will be sorely missed, they appear to have plans for the future, hinting at another television project related to Europe—but without divulging many details.
The tone behind the scenes has been described as relaxed, fostering strong relationships with contestants and leading to many enjoyable seasons. Philip shared, “Candidates always come with great pleasure,” reinforcing their longstanding ability to attract good-natured individuals to the show.
Despite their success, van Rossem also expressed curiosity about why other iterations of the format didn’t achieve the same recognition. “It puzzles me why John de Mol couldn’t make the success fly on its network, yet we have over here,” he mused. This uncertainty hints at the chemistry and style they brought to De Slimste Mens, which set it apart from its predecessors.
Looking forward to the last few episodes, Freriks noted, “I will most certainly leave the studio feeling melancholic after the last taping.” He likened their departure to losing access to a cherished vacation home filled with happy memories. “But I wouldn’t say I will miss it too much, as we both have enjoyable experiences we’ll carry with us,” van Rossem added.
The more their shows go on, the more evident the emotional bond they’ve formed over more than a decade shines through. It’s emblematic of the connection viewers have forged with them; they’ve not only enriched Dutch television but have also created lasting impressions on their audiences.
With fond farewells and laughter, Philip and Maarten’s last season together opens up to new beginnings, giving Herman van der Zandt the chance to carry the torch. The show will continue to air on NPO 1 every weekday at 20:30 through this final season.
