Fighting Erupts Again As Jihadists Target Aleppo

Renewed violence from extremist groups has led to heavy civilian casualties and widespread fear among Aleppo residents

Jihadist activity has surged around Aleppo, Syria, as heavy fighting erupted involving radical group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). This escalation is drawing international attention and concern, particularly for the civilian population caught amid the chaos.

The latest round of conflict kicked off with HTS launching a surprise offensive on November 28, 2024, targeting areas controlled by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Reports indicate fierce fighting as HTS seeks to regain territory lost over the years, including towns and villages around Aleppo and Idlib.

According to frontline accounts, the Syrian army is pushing back against these incursions; nevertheless, the situation remains dire. Father Hugo Alaniz, who spoke with the charity Aid to the Church in Need, noted, “The situation is very tense, they are less than 10 kilometers away.” Hospitals are overwhelmed by casualties, with many civilians injured and others forced to flee.

Local sources report increasing missile and artillery shelling on various parts of Aleppo, leading to civilian casualties. The area around the University of Aleppo has been particularly hard-hit, where at least four civilians, including students, were killed during bombardments. The humanitarian repercussions of this offensive are evident, with thousands seeking refuge from the violence.

International reactions have emerged, as the Syrian government, alongside its ally Russia, commenced airstrikes against HTS positions. Observers noted at least 125 airstrikes across Idlib and western Aleppo in response to the incursion, which led to numerous civilian injuries and forced thousands out of their homes.

The geopolitical underpinnings of the conflict reveal layers of complexity and historic tensions. Angela Ghibellini of the International Crisis Group pointed out significant factors contributing to this resurgence of violence: “The Russians are distracted by Ukraine, and they are less invested politically, if not militarily, in Syria.” This sentiment is echoed by analysts observing Russia’s military has shifted resources to support its activities elsewhere, effectively leaving Assad’s regime more vulnerable.

Adding to the multifaceted crisis, Iranian forces are strained under concurrent pressures within their domain, particularly from Israel's continued military interventions. Iranian media reports indicate casualties among their ranks, including the death of Brigadier General Kioumars Pourhashemi during the recent fighting, reflecting the tight knot of external and internal conflicts feeding this war.

Throughout this turmoil, local civilian populations are bearing the brunt of the violence and instability. Father Alaniz lamented how fear grips the population, highlighting the emotional toll amid the bombardments. He said, “The people here have great trust in God’s help and the power of prayer.” Yet, faith often wavers under the anxiety of constant danger.

For many Aleppo residents, the distress of another conflict feels like the chapter of a grim and repeated narrative. With calls to action from international charities and religious leaders, the call for prayers and humanitarian efforts becomes more urgent. Regina Lynch of Aid to the Church in Need urged supporters globally to “pray for peace and the protection of the vulnerable” amid such suffering.

HTS's actions—once described as representative of the broader Islamist insurgency—are stirring debates on the effectiveness of long-standing international policies concerning Syria. Analysts indicate these developments present significant challenges for international peace efforts, with each act of violence undermining potential resolutions.

Moving forward, the interplay of local factions, international interventions, and the humanitarian crisis will demand closer scrutiny and strategic responses. The current offensive has reverberated through the community, raising questions about the effectiveness of military maneuvers against civilian resilience and suffering.

given the intertwined fates of rebels, the Assad regime, and foreign powers, the upcoming days and weeks are anticipated to be pivotal. Will the escalation lead to greater humanitarian crises, or will it push international stakeholders to devise more sustainable solutions?

Despite the uncertainty, one reality remains clear: the people of Syria, particularly Aleppo, remain ensnared within these cycles of violence, desperately seeking peace amid the turmoil.
