Local leaders and citizens unite to honor freedom fighters of the past and promote peace.

On March 1, 2025, the city of Inchon commemorated the 106th anniversary of the March 1st Movement with heartfelt ceremonies and vibrant celebrations. Approximately 1,200 attendees, including independence fighters’ descendants, dignitaries, students, and citizens, gathered at the Art Center to honor the sacrifices made for Korea's freedom.

The events commenced with Mayor Yoon Jeong-bok, along with key figures such as city council chairman Jeong Hae-gwon and education superintendent Do Seong-hoon, visiting the National Cemetery at Su-bong Park. They paid tribute to the spirits of fallen heroes and patriots, reflecting on their noble dedication to the independence movement.

The ceremony unfolded under the slogan "Peace, Freedom, and the Desire for Independence—Today’s International Peace City Inchon," encompassing national pledges, the reading of the independence declaration, the presentation of honors to deserving independence fighters, and stirring performances. A significant moment came when the independence declaration was read aloud by Lee Wan-seok, head of the Inchon chapter of the Korean Liberation Association, alongside descendants of independence heroes such as Yoon Seok-kyu and Park Myung-hyun.

Among the awards presented was the Order of National Foundation conveyed posthumously to the late Seo Dong-hwa and the Presidential commendation awarded to Yi Young-kyu’s children, Seo Jae-eung and Yi Jae-hwa, recognizing their parents' contributions to Korea’s struggle for freedom.

Poet Jo Eun-young, the granddaughter of independence activist Yi Joon-myeong, delivered her heartfelt poem titled "Breath on That Road," which captured the audience's emotions and emphasized the significance of the day. The rousing cheers of “Mansei” (long live) led by Jeong Hae-gwon and the descendants of independence fighters enlivened the spirit of celebration.

The ceremonial performances featured the fusion Korean music band Kyungji, who paid homage to courageous patriots throughout the colonial period with pieces such as “36 Years (From Darkness to Light)” and “Cries of Freedom” to memorialize the sacrifices made during the fight for independence.

Additional activities took place outside the Art Center, offering diverse experiences such as mock prison experiences evocative of the struggles faced by independence fighters, face painting with the national flag, quizzes on history, the creation of oversized flags, and exhibitions showcasing the history of independence movements.

Following the main commemoration, Mayor Yoon traveled to Chang-young Elementary School to participate in a reenactment of the March 1st Movement, engaging with local students and reiteriating the importance of remembering their heritage.

“The independence movement was not just about personal dignity and regaining national rights; it was also about striving for world peace,” remarked Mayor Yoon, emphasizing the need to uphold the spirit of the movement today.

He renewed his determination to build "World Class City, International Peace City Inchon" with the legacy of independence as the guiding principle, ensuring residents and future generations carry this spirit forward.

The day concluded with voices raised high with the refrain of “Mansei,” unifying attendees in their purpose and commitment to peace and freedom. The celebration not only served as remembrance for those lost but also as inspiration for future endeavors for coexistence and diplomacy.
