FedEx Expands Fleet With New Boeing And ATR Cargo Aircraft

FedEx strengthens its global operations with new aircraft orders and revises retirement plans for aging fleet.

FedEx has confirmed significant investments in its air cargo operations by unveiling orders for additional aircraft that aim to bolster its global fleet and enhance service reliability. The company announced it will add 10 ATR 72-600F freighters and eight more Boeing 777 freighters, along with an extension on the retirement timeline for its aging MD-11 fleet, underscoring its commitment to maintaining a competitive edge in the cargo aviation market.

The recent order of 10 ATR 72-600F aircraft builds upon FedEx's previous commitment to purchasing 30 units, with the new deliveries expected between 2027 and 2029. This freighter variant is recognized for its optimized cargo capacity, accommodating up to 75 cubic meters and a payload of 9.2 tons, thanks to features like a large cargo door, a dedicated loading system, and a spacious cross-section. The ATR 72-600F will help replace older ATR models, thereby enhancing FedEx's operational efficiency across diverse geographic locales ranging from the warmth of Miami to the frosty conditions of Anchorage.

Alexis Vidal, Senior Vice-President Commercial of ATR, commented on the significance of this decision, stating, “FedEx’s decision to order additional ATR 72-600F underscores their trust in our aircraft’s performance and versatility. Our freighter variant is an essential component of the ATR family, offering significant advantages over traditional passenger-to-freighter conversions, including enhanced reliability and availability, and longer-term planning.” FedEx Express has played a pivotal role in the aircraft’s adoption, being its launch customer and utilizing earlier ATR models to effectively perform feeder operations, thus bridging gaps in its expansive network.

In addition to the ATR expansion, FedEx is also revitalizing its fleet of Boeing wide-body freighters. The company announced an order for eight Boeing 777 freighters, demonstrating its strategy to cater to the increasing demand for international cargo service. The deliveries include three aircraft arriving in 2026 and five in 2027, with the aim of upgrading its aging freighter fleet that previously saw the retirement of nine MD-11 and 22 Boeing 757 jets last year.

With this action, FedEx extends the retirement timeline for the MD-11 from 2028 to 2032, providing flexibility to adjust plans based on market demands. According to reports from Boeing, in addition to new freighter orders, FedEx has also purchased two used Boeing 777s to further expand its operational capabilities.

FedEx's mainline fleet currently features an array of aircraft types, including 65 Airbus A300-600RF models, 138 Boeing 767-300F freighters, and 57 Boeing 777-200F aircraft, along with around 70 Boeing 757-200(SF) aircraft. These diverse aircraft allow for effective servicing of varying cargo demands across multiple markets.
