FDA Flags Costco Egg Recall Over Salmonella Risk

Serious health threats prompt Class I recall of Kirkland Signature eggs sold across five states

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has declared the recall of Kirkland Signature Organic Pasture-Raised eggs sold at Costco as the highest risk level, following concerns over potential salmonella contamination. The recall, announced on November 27, 2024, affects approximately 10,800 units of eggs produced by Handsome Brook Farms, which were improperly distributed to Costco stores.

According to the FDA, the classification of this recall as Class I signifies there is "a reasonable probability" these eggs could cause serious adverse health consequences or even death. This designation reflects the serious nature of salmonella contamination, which is known to cause severe infections, especially among vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

The recalled eggs were sold at 25 Costco locations across five southern U.S. states: Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, starting from November 22, 2024. The affected products are identified by UPC code 9661910680 and Julian code 327, with a use-by date of January 5, 2025. The mishap occurred when eggs intended for other purposes were mistakenly packaged and distributed for retail sale, prompting the company's swift recall.

Despite the serious risk classification, no illnesses linked to these eggs have been reported so far. The FDA continues to closely monitor the situation. Handsome Brook Farms has initiated additional controls and retraining to prevent such mishaps from recurring. Consumers are advised to check if they have bought these specific egg cartons and to either dispose of them or return them to Costco for a full refund.

Salmonella is among the most common foodborne pathogens, posing symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, and nausea, typically appearing six hours to six days after exposure. Most healthy individuals recover without treatment, but the disease can be particularly severe for certain at-risk groups.

Health experts stress the importance of practicing safe food handling and cooking procedures to reduce the risk of salmonella infections. Good hygiene, such as thorough handwashing and cooking eggs thoroughly, is imperative for all consumers, especially those with higher vulnerability.

This incident, which shares the stage with recent recalls of contaminated cucumbers, underlines the continued challenges of food safety and the need for vigilance among regulators, producers, and consumers alike. The FDA’s elevation of the recall serves as both a warning and as reassurance of the diligence exercised to safeguard public health.

For any questions or concerns, customers who purchased the affected eggs are encouraged to contact Handsome Brook Farms directly or refer to their website for more information.
