FC Homburg Secures Dominant 5-2 Win Against Eintracht Frankfurt II

Homburg eclipses prior defeat with strong performance, but concerns arise over player injury.

On March 1, 2025, FC Homburg showcased its strength by defeating Eintracht Frankfurt II with an impressive score of 5-2 during the Regionalliga Südwest match held at Waldstadion, marking their first victory under new head coach Roland Seitz.

The team was eager to bounce back from their disappointing season opener, where they suffered a 1-2 loss against Hessen Kassel. Homburg came out strong from the start, displaying quick and cohesive teamwork, with David Hummel netting the first goal just six minutes after kickoff. His early strike set the tone for the match.

Following Hummel’s opener, Michael Heilig doubled Homburg's lead with a header from close range at the 18-minute mark. This was just the beginning, as Markus Mendler added to the tally by scoring the third goal at 29 minutes after a splendid build-up play, where he showcased his dominance by converting under pressure inside the penalty box.

Just before halftime, Niclas Anspach capped off the strong first half by scoring with another header, leaving the scoreboard reading 4-0 at the break. The atmosphere at the stadium was electric, even with the attendance standing at just 910 fans.

After the halftime intermission, Frankfurt II attempted to stage a comeback by making three changes to their lineup, which momentarily disrupted Homburg's rhythm. Kaan İnanoglu scored early for Frankfurt, reducing the deficit to 4-1 just four minutes after the restart.

Not to be deterred, Homburg quickly responded with Mendler’s second goal at the 53rd minute, putting the home team back with a commanding 5-1 lead. Unfortunately, the match took a concerning turn when Heilig had to be substituted due to injury, suspected to be a torn ligament, after sustaining a blow during play. The team and fans are now holding their breath, hoping for good news about his condition.

Marcel Wenig then found the back of the net with a stunning free kick for Frankfurt at the 79th minute, marking their second goal of the match and closing out the scoreline at 5-2. Despite the late surge from Frankfurt, Homburg maintained control and ended the match securely, solidifying their ascendancy at home.

Seitz expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, emphasizing the importance of this win for building momentum moving forward. "This match was fundamental for regaining our confidence after the last setback," he mentioned. Homburg is now poised to face two consecutive away matches, first against SC Friedrichsthal on March 5 for the Saarland Cup, followed by another league match against SC Freiburg II on March 9.

Looking closely at the table, this result brings Homburg to 31 points, firmly establishing them mid-table with hopes of climbing higher as the season progresses. They have recorded eight wins, seven draws, and seven losses. Meanwhile, Eintracht Frankfurt II is facing struggles at the bottom of the table with their tally now reaching twelve losses, contributing to their difficult season.

Homburg's comprehensive victory not only reflects their offensive strength but also sets the stage for the challenges lying ahead. Fans are eagerly anticipating how well the team will continue to reform under Seitz and if they can build on this positive trend.
