FC Bayern Mourns Death Of Longtime President Dr. Fritz Scherer

Dr. Fritz Scherer, who led the club to great success, passes away at age 85.

The FC Bayern Munich team is mourning the loss of Dr. Fritz Scherer, who passed away on March 16, 2025, at the age of 85. His death was announced by the club, marking the end of an era for one of its most influential figures. Scherer’s deep commitment to FC Bayern spanned over 50 years and included pivotal leadership roles such as president.

Dr. Fritz Scherer held the president’s position from 1985 until 1994, and it was under his influence during those years, particularly notable was 1987 when FC Bayern became the German record champion, achieving multiple national titles. His efforts helped shape Bayern Munich as the dominating force it is today.

Reacting to the loss, Herbert Hainer, current president of FC Bayern, remarked, “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Fritz Scherer. FC Bayern will always hold his memory in the highest honour.” Hainer emphasized Scherer’s loyalty to the club over decades, stating, “With him as president, central decisions for this club were made, without which FC Bayern would never stand where it does today.”

Also speaking of Scherer’s legacy, Uli Hoeneß, who joined as manager at the club around the same time Scherer became treasurer, reflected, “He always had an open ear for everyone, and he has always done FC Bayern good with his calmness, objectivity and expertise.” Hoeneß noted how the club’s finances skyrocketed, pointing out the turnover growth from 12 million marks when he first started to around 950 million euros today. This testimony shows the impact of Scherer’s strategic approach at the club.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who began working closely with Scherer from 1994, praised him as well: “Many FC Bayern milestones are closely linked to the name Fritz Scherer. He deserves the utmost respect.” Rummenigge recalled Scherer’s calm authority and strategic foresight, which played significant roles during pivotal club moments.

Scherer joined FC Bayern as a member on July 1, 1971, holding membership number 418. Over his 30-plus years of commitment, he served not only as president but also as vice-president from 1994 to 2012, treasurer from 1979 to 1985, and various other roles including supervisory board member and honorary vice-president.

On the occasion of his 85th birthday, celebrated just a month prior to his passing, Scherer highlighted the club’s success and ambitions during his time. He fondly remembered significant moments like his first championship as president and detailed the experience of developing the Allianz Arena.
