FBI Offers Reward For Information On Ballot Box Arsons

Multiple incidents of arson raise election security concerns as authorities seek public assistance

The FBI has recently announced a substantial reward of $25,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the individual responsible for several arson incidents targeting ballot boxes in Washington and Oregon. This alarming situation has raised significant concerns about election security as the incidents coincided with early voting for the upcoming elections.

Authorities revealed on November 13, 2024, details of three separate instances where ballot boxes were set ablaze using improvised incendiary devices. The fires occurred on October 8 and October 28. The first incident took place early morning on October 8 at a ballot drop box located at Fisher's Landing Transit Center in Vancouver, Washington. The subsequent incidents on October 28 involved ballot boxes both at the same location and another outside the Multnomah County Elections Division Headquarters in Portland, Oregon. Notably, the October 28 fire severely damaged nearly 500 ballots, necessitating the replacement of the ballot box.

"These actions represent not just vandalism but also attacks on our democratic process," remarked officials as they underscored the gravity of the situation. The ballot boxes were equipped with fire suppression systems, but failure of such devices resulted in significant damage during certain incidents. For example, the fire suppression mechanism within the ballot box at the Vancouver location did not operate effectively during the October 28 event, leading to numerous ballots being charred. Thankfully, the Portland fire suppression system minimized damage as only three ballots were harmed.

The FBI's investigation has identified the suspect as a white male, aged between 30 and 40, described as balding with very short hair. Authorities believe he may have experience with metalworking and welding, inferred from the way the incendiary devices were constructed. Surveillance footage from the purge of the ballot box incident on October 28 showcased the suspect's vehicle, identified as a dark-colored, early 2003 to 2004 Volvo S-60 sedan. The vehicle also sported a fraudulent temporary license plate.

"No detail is too small. No tip is too minor," insisted Gregory Austin, the acting special agent for the FBI's Seattle field office. "If it relates to the vehicle matching our description, we want to hear about it." The FBI has prepared both local field offices to accept any tips and are encouraging the public to reach out to them with any information. The agency emphasized its commitment to defending the rights of voters and the integrity of the election process, urging citizens to come forward as engaged members of the democracy.

Investigators are particularly interested not just in identifying the individual but also are trying to discern the motive behind the attacks. The incendiary devices utilized carried explicit messages, including “Free Gaza” and “Free Palestine,” leading some law enforcement officials to question whether the suspect identifies with these pro-Palestinian sentiments or if these markings were intended to sow discord among communities nurturing different beliefs.

Local agencies, along with state officials from both Oregon and Washington, have reported scaling up measures to secure ballot drop boxes amid growing concerns of targeted attacks. Adjustments have included changing collection times to evenings when ballot boxes might contain more ballots, hence presenting easier targets for potential attacks.

Following up on this alarming situation, the FBI has appealed widely for public cooperation to assist the investigation. They have provided various channels to report tips, emphasizing anonymity where necessary. The urgency of public involvement cannot be overstated. Each lead, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could provide the missing piece to this troubling puzzle.

With the election season heating up, authorities are intensely vigilant to avoid any disruption or manipulation of the voting process. The ramifications of allowing acts of vandalism like these to go unchecked are dire, as they can undermine the public’s trust and the integrity of the electoral system.

The local community, along with federal law enforcement, is standing firm against these attacks, committed to preserving democracy and ensuring every vote counts.
