FBI Investigates Ballot Box Fires With Reward Offer

Authorities seek public assistance to resolve alarming incidents of vandalism against voting locations

The FBI has ramped up its investigation related to fires set at ballot boxes across Washington and Oregon, following several incidents leading up to the pivotal U.S. presidential election. The federal agency is now offering a significant reward of up to $25,000 for any information leading to the identification and arrest of the suspect involved.

The first incident was reported on October 8, when one ballot box was intentionally set ablaze between 3:30 and 4:00 A.M. in Vancouver, Washington. Thankfully, no ballots were damaged during this initial fire. Just weeks later, on October 28, the situation escalated sharply. Multiple ballot boxes were targeted, leading to substantial ballot destruction.

According to FBI reports, two incendiary device fires were reported — one located at the Vancouver ballot box and another at one in Portland, Oregon. This time, hundreds of ballots were either damaged or completely destroyed by flames. The fire suppression systems installed within the boxes failed to operate correctly, particularly in the Vancouver incident, which allowed for more serious damage.

The FBI's investigation shed light on surveillance footage from the October 28 incidents. Video captured shows the suspect driving up to the ballot box, lighting an object, and inserting it. Shortly afterward, smoke and sparks erupt from inside the box. Authorities believe this person is linked to all three fires.

Described by investigators as being a white male, approximately 30 to 40 years old with thinning hair, the suspect is thought to have some level of proficiency with metalwork and welding—skills inferred from the nature of the incendiary devices utilized. The vehicle used to commit these crimes has been identified as likely being a 2003 to 2004 early-model Volvo S-60 sedan, dark in color and featuring dark wheels with no Volvo insignia on the front. At the time, it bore what appeared to be fraudulent temporary plates from Washington State.

Coupled with the physical description of the suspect, this raises alarm bells for local officials and voters, who are now on high alert as Election Day looms. The local community — particularly voters who may be worried about the security of their cast ballots — has been encouraged to come forward with any leads they might have, no matter how insignificant they might seem.

It's worth noting the incendiary devices employed were inscribed with politically charged messages, including expressions conveying support for the Palestinian cause. This has raised questions about the motives behind the attacks and whether they were deliberately aimed at creating chaos among voters leading up to the election.

Officals have emphasized the urgency of the situation, calling these incidents "an attack on democracy." The FBI reassured the public, stating they are devoting significant resources to unearth the truth and hold those responsible accountable. They are also pursuing leads based on eyewitness accounts and tips from the community.

Details surrounding the incidents remain murky, but the authorities are committed to piecing together the various components of the investigation. Investigators have emphasized the significance of preventing any such attacks from obstructing the election process. The FBI's commitment reflects the broader public safety interests and the desire to uphold electoral integrity, particularly as mail-in voting becomes more prevalent.

With the election creeping closer, concerns surrounding voter safety and security are palpable. This issue isn't just limited to the immediate geographical locations of these incidents but reverberates through the national conversation on election integrity. “We won’t be deterred by intimidation,” remarked one election official, echoing sentiments of vigilance within the community.

For now, those wishing to contribute to the investigation can dial the FBI’s tip line at 1-800-225-5324 or submit anonymous tips online at tips.fbi.gov. Each tip, no matter how small, corresponds to large strides toward justice and safety during this consequential electoral period.

The FBI's investigation remains dynamic as officials sift through clues and maintain dialogues with community members. The hope is to quell any fear surrounding the ballot box fires and reinforce voter confidence leading up to Election Day.
