Fatal Ultralight Crash Near Méribel-Les-Allues

Two deceased after Piper PA-18 collides with paragliders and crashes on chalet roof

A tragic aviation accident unfolded on Tuesday, January 21, when a Piper PA-18 small touristic aircraft collided with two tandem paragliders above the Méribel ski resort, crashing onto the roof of an unoccupied chalet on the commune of Les Allues, Savoie.

The collision occurred at approximately 16:55, leading to the deaths of both occupants of the plane—a 58-year-old and a 26-year-old—while the paragliders fortunately emerged from the incident with only shock and no physical injuries.

According to Benoît Bachelet, the prosecutor of Albertville, "Un monomoteur, avec deux occupants à son bord, a fini sur le toit d'un chalet à Méribel." This stark description highlights the severity of the incident, which caught the attention of emergency services across the region.

Witnesses reported hearing the engine noise of the aircraft before watching it collide with the paragliders. The accident sparked considerable rescue efforts, with approximately 30 vehicles and 45 firefighters deployed to the scene. The prefecture of Savoie later confirmed the grim outcome, stating, "Les deux passagers de l'avion, deux hommes âgés de 26 et 58 ans, sont décédés dans l'accident."

The aftermath revealed significant risks not only to the victims but also to the structure of the chalet. The aircraft's collision caused jet fuel to leak, prompting emergency teams to act swiftly to contain the situation. The responding firefighters noted, "L'accident a entraîné une fuite de kérosène qui s'est écoulée dans le chalet," underscoring the urgency during the chaotic scene.

Thankfully, the two paragliders involved, though shaken, reported no injuries. They were quickly attended to by first responders who set up emergency medical and psychiatric support for witnesses and relatives of the deceased.

Despite the chaos, the local mayor arrived to oversee actions taken by emergency services, which also included the national gendarmerie and SAMU, France's emergency medical services. Together, they worked to manage the risks posed by the crash and to initiate investigations.

“Les circonstances précises de l'accident sont inconnues à cette heure,” said the Savoie prefecture, leaving many questions about the cause of the tragedy. A judicial inquiry has been launched to ascertain why the plane was flying dangerously close to where paragliders were operating.

Local residents expressed their shock at the accident, shared feelings of heartbreak for the victims, and recounted the distressing moments as they witnessed the paragliders coming down from the sky. One resident recounted, "J’ai entendu un avion passer... puis les parapentistes qui ont atterri dans des arbres," indicating how surreal and frightening the events were.

The entire community grieves the loss of life and mourns the innocent victims of this preventable tragedy. Air safety remains at the forefront of discussions as investigations continue, with hopes of preventing similar incidents from occurring again.

This unfortunate incident reminds everyone of the risks associated with recreational air activities and the importance of strict safety regulations. Let this incident serve as a catalyst for enhancing air safety protocols to protect both aviation and recreational sports enthusiasts. Thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those affected by this devastating crash.
