Authorities investigate rare incident at The Oxford Center in Troy, Michigan as community mourns

A tragic incident occurred on Friday morning at The Oxford Center, a medical facility located in Troy, Michigan, when a hyperbaric chamber exploded, resulting in the death of a 5-year-old boy and injuries to his mother. The explosion, which happened shortly before 8 AM, is currently under investigation by local authorities.

The boy, who hailed from Royal Oak, Michigan, was reportedly inside the chamber during the explosion. When first responders arrived, the child was found deceased. "It's a horrible, tragic incident," said Troy Police Lieutenant Ben Hancock during a news conference. His mother was standing right next to the chamber and suffered injuries to her arms from the blast.

The Oxford Center, located at 165 Kirts Boulevard, Troy, has been providing hyperbaric oxygen therapy for over 15 years, treating various conditions including decompression sickness, carbon monoxide poisoning, and tissue injuries. According to the Mayo Clinic, hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves delivering pure oxygen to patients within a pressurized chamber. The therapy increases the oxygen levels within the body, aiding healing processes.

Lieutenant Keith Young of the Troy Fire Department explained how the environment within hyperbaric chambers can be hazardous. "The presence of such a high amount of oxygen in a pressurized environment can make it extremely combustible," he noted. The chamber contained 100% oxygen, creating risks for fires and explosions, especially if safety protocols are not strictly adhered to.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the chamber engulfed in flames but were able to quickly contain the fire to the chamber's area. The explosion occurred without any prior warning, leaving investigators puzzled about its cause. "We don’t know exactly what the child was being treated for at the center today," Lieutenant Hancock mentioned, stressing the rarity of such incidents.

Following the explosion, The Oxford Center issued a statement expressing their condolences and confirming their commitment to ensuring the safety of their patients. Spokesperson Andrew Kistner stated, "The safety and wellbeing of the children we serve is our highest priority. Nothing like this has happened in our more than 15 years of providing this type of therapy. We do not know why or how this happened, and we will participate fully in all investigations."

The incident has raised significant concerns about the safety protocols associated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy facilities. Medical experts advocate for stringent regulations to prevent such explosions from occurring.
