A serious collision near Horningsea prompts police investigation and road closures

Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene, where they discovered a multi-vehicle collision involving a lorry and several cars. Tragically, one individual in a car sustained fatal injuries, while three others from the same vehicle suffered serious injuries. The driver of the lorry, a 38-year-old man from Cambridge, has since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He remains in police custody as investigations continue.

As a result of the crash, the A14 eastbound remains closed between junctions 34 and 35, with authorities warning that the road is likely to stay shut for an extended period. Diversion routes have been implemented to help manage traffic flow during this disruption. Motorists are advised to exit at junction 33 Milton Interchange, take the A10 northbound to Stretham, then follow the A1123 and A142 to rejoin the A14 at junction 37.

According to a spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Police, “Police, fire and the ambulance service were called at about 9:25 PM yesterday with reports of a collision involving multiple vehicles on the eastbound carriageway of the A14.” The spokesperson added, “One person in a car has sustained fatal injuries. National Highways personnel are also on the scene, working alongside emergency services. They noted that the investigation is complex, and it may take some time before the road can be reopened safely. A spokesperson for National Highways stated, “Cambridgeshire Police remain on scene conducting a full collision investigation. They advise it is a very complex investigation and the road is expected to remain closed throughout the morning.”

The impact of the crash has led to severe congestion in the area, with reports of significant delays. Traffic monitoring services, such as Inrix, have indicated that the A14 eastbound is closed, and queueing traffic extends back to junction 32 (Histon Interchange). Drivers are encouraged to use the diversion routes to avoid further delays.

In addition to managing the aftermath of the crash, police are appealing for witnesses. They are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who saw the vehicles in the moments leading up to the incident or anyone with dash cam footage. Those with information are urged to report online or call 101, quoting incident number 547 of April 22.
