Farmers Plan Nationwide Protests Against Tax Hike

NFU leads calls for action on January 25 as inheritance tax changes threaten family farms.

Farmers across the United Kingdom are gearing up for protests against proposed inheritance tax changes, heralded by the National Farmers' Union (NFU), who initiated widespread demonstrations set for January 25, 2024. This move aims to rally public support behind farmers who argue the recent amendments jeopardize their livelihoods and the future of family farms.

Charles Goadby, a Warwickshire farmer, expressed frustration with politicians during his interview on GB News, stating, "They're backing us, it's just the MPs, but in fact most of the MPs are backing us too. It's just the whips and the frontbench preventing them." With growing signs of public discontent surrounding these tax changes, Goadby lamented, "There's no democracy, they're just being told what they can and can't do." He believes the lack of genuine support from MPs reveals the entrenched issues farmers face.

The impending protests will spread across different parts of the UK, including tractor rallies and roadside banners strategically placed along busy roads to maximize visibility. Tom Bradshaw, the NFU president, reinforced the union's commitment, asserting, "There is too much at risk: our families, our future, our heritage and the undermining of the very sector... producing safe, secure supply..." Such powerful statements reflect the broader sentiment within farming communities, feeling their hard work and dedication are being systematically undervalued.

The legislation introduced by the Labour government under Chancellor Rachel Reeves has sparked heated debates. Starting from April 6, 2026, the full 100% relief from inheritance tax will be restricted to the first £1 million for agricultural and business property. This change means those exceeding this threshold would face inheritance tax at 20%, markedly less than the typical 40% rate but still administratively burdensome on many farmers.

The crisis has generated significant alarm within agricultural circles, with estimates anywhere from 500 to 70,000 farms potentially encountering the inheritance tax. Duncan Wight, another farmer from Drumoak, passionately described the situation as "soul destroying" and warned, "We are very angry because we have worked hard all our lives and never really been shown appreciation." His Words strongly underline the growing agitation among farmers, many of whom fear for their family businesses and livelihoods, built over generations.

Adding to the discourse, Kelly Seaton, a prominent farming campaigner, indicated the protests may intensify post-Christmas. Her warning came with reassurance as she stated, "I believe we will see more targeted action taken..." She stressed the movement would aim to minimize disruption to the public, highlighting the inherent struggles farmers face.

The pushback against these tax reforms is not only confined to farmers. Local councils have also rallied against the policy, with 22 authorities, including regions from Cornwall to Norfolk, passing motions of opposition. The growing dissatisfaction demonstrates the rift forming between newly elected Labour MPs and their rural constituents, as the latter feel their voices are going unheeded.

A government spokesperson defended the decision, claiming only about 500 estates would be impacted by these changes annually. They reassured farmers of continued support, stating: "For these estates, inheritance tax will be at half the rate paid by others, with ten years to pay back the liability interest-free." Yet, the farming community perceives such claims as out of touch with reality, considering rising costs and shrinking profit margins.

Bradshaw remarked on the importance of these protests, saying, "This date will give everyone... an opportunity to support family farms from right across the UK, to show unity and strength..." He emphasized the importance of broader public involvement, stating, "The 25th is not just a day for the farming community to show unity but anyone who believes... family farms deserve to be valued and supported.” Such rallying cries indicate the pressing need for recognition and adaptation from governmental policies.

Despite the environment secretary's reassurances over the funding allocated to farming budgets, amounting to £5 billion over two years, farmers remain skeptical. The policies enacted by the government seem to undermine the economic wellbeing of family-owned agricultural lands — resources they believe ought to be preserved and nurtured for future generations.

With the planned demonstrations just around the corner, the tension between farmers and policymakers continues to simmer. Farmers are striving to unite their voices, hoping their actions resonate beyond the rural precincts they inhabit to instigate systemic changes to government policy and recognition of their efforts.

It remains to be seen how these upcoming protests will influence governmental decisions. Analysts point to the historical significance of these movements transitioning through the agricultural sphere and shaping policy. For the farmers, the stakes couldn't be higher as they find themselves advocating for their rights and the integrity of the very foundation of Britain’s food supply.
