Fajardo And Bethel-Thompson Traded Between Alouettes And Elks

Major quarterback trade reshapes Canadian Football League dynamics for next season.

Two prominent Canadian Football League (CFL) quarterbacks are on the move as the Montreal Alouettes announced the trade of Cody Fajardo to the Edmonton Elks, acquiring McLeod Bethel-Thompson in return. This move signifies not just roster adjustments, but also the shifting dynamics within the league.

The announcement came on December 17, 2024, as both teams looked to reposition themselves for the upcoming season. Fajardo, who was instrumental in the Alouettes' Grey Cup victory, expressed sentiments about leaving Montreal but showed resilience, stating, "Thank you for the brotherhood and memories… Playing for you has been an honor I'll never forget."

Fajardo, 32, is regarded for his skill and leadership qualities. During the last season, he completed 268 of 364 passes with impressive statistics, including 3,105 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. His performance shone particularly during the 2023 Grey Cup, where he was named MVP after leading his team to victory. This success, paired with his stature as a fan-favorite, made his trade to Edmonton surprising yet intriguing.

Meanwhile, McLeod Bethel-Thompson, 36, spent the previous season with the Elks, where he showcased his talents by completing 318 of 468 passes for 3,748 yards, 24 touchdowns, and just 11 interceptions. His performance has earned him respect across the league, and with the Elks he proved to be one of the league's top quarterbacks. His prominence was previously established during his time with the Toronto Argonauts, where he won the Grey Cup twice.

Both players’ trades are rooted deep within their contracts and team strategies. The Alouettes decided to place their trust in younger quarterback Davis Alexander, who had earlier received a three-year extension. General manager Danny Maciocia noted, "McLeod is a veteran in the CFL, and he could be a great backup for our team,” as he highlighted their intent to maintain competitive depth at quarterback.

The trade also marks the end of Fajardo’s tenure with Montreal, which started two years ago. Reflecting on his experience, Fajardo stated, “I never imagined ending this chapter as I was hoping the book ended in Montreal, but life throws you curveballs, and champions adapt.” His words underline both his professionalism and dedication to the game, two qualities sought after by the Elks.

This strategic maneuver could change the fortunes of both franchises moving forward. The Elks are now hoping Fajardo can step up and provide strong competition to their starter, Tre Ford, as Ed Hervey, the Elks' VP of football operations, emphasized the importance of depth at the quarterback position.

Fans of both teams will be watching closely to see how this trade pans out. Fajardo and Bethel-Thompson are seasoned athletes with commendable credentials, and the responsibilities they will carry could impact their respective teams' performance significantly.

Both franchises now look forward to the upcoming season with renewed hopes and strategies. The Alouettes aim to build around Davis Alexander, leveraging his growth and potential, whereas the Elks seek to maximize the experience and skill of Fajardo to push for higher achievements within the league.

With both quarterbacks proven talents, the trade invariably enhances the competitiveness of the CFL as teams aim to position themselves favorably for not just the season, but also for the long-term success of their franchises. It is, without doubt, a pivotal moment for both the Alouettes and the Elks as they turn over this new leaf.

Time will tell how these transitions affect their standings come playoff season, but for now, the excitement and anticipation surrounding their performances and contributions is at an all-time high.
