FA Cup Shock: Two Red Card Incidents Shatter Matches

Liam Roberts and Matheus Cunha receive direct red cards during heated FA Cup games.

Two FA Cup matches on March 1, 2025, ended dramatically due to significant red card incidents, casting shadows over the competition and raising concerns about player safety.

At Selhurst Park, Millwall's goalkeeper Liam Roberts was sent off just five minutes after kickoff following a reckless flying kick on Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta. Roberts attempted to intercept a long ball but ended up clashing with Mateta, leaving the Palace forward face down on the pitch as medical staff rushed to his aid. The impact of the kick was severe, causing Mateta to be hospitalized. "Currently, he has a deep wound behind the ear and a head injury. Obviously, he is in the hospital, so we hope for the best," said Steve Parish, the chairman of Crystal Palace, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

Referee Michael Oliver initially didn’t penalize Roberts but, after consulting VAR, he reviewed the incident on the pitch-side monitor and amended his decision by showing Roberts a direct red card. Parish described the challenge, stating, "This is the most reckless challenge I have witnessed on the field." Mateta, who has been prolific for Palace this season with 12 goals, was replaced on the field, and the game continued with significant tension.

Despite the early set-back, Crystal Palace secured victory, defeating Millwall 3-1 and advancing to the quarter-finals. The injured Mateta, who had to be transported by ambulance after the game, is expected to recover from his injuries, with Parish assuring fans of updates on his condition.

Meanwhile, during another FA Cup match on the same day, Matheus Cunha of Wolverhampton Wanderers faced his red-card episode. With the score level against Bournemouth and the match nearing its end, Cunha found himself embroiled in controversy. He reacted to being pulled down by defender Milos Kerkez, leading to him delivering what can be described as a headbutt during their altercation. The referee had no choice but to show Cunha the red card, leaving the Wolves with ten men as they prepared for the penalty shootout.

Wolves' captain, Tyler Adams, expressed disappointment following the match, reflecting on Cunha's key role: "We were left with one less player for penalties, but Cunha had been key to getting us there." Indeed, Cunha had scored the equalizer earlier with a stunning strike, adding to his tally of 15 goals across all competitions this season.

The two incidents during the FA Cup raise pressing questions about player conduct and safety. The controversy surrounding Roberts’ action was particularly alarming, as it echoed calls for stricter penalties on dangerous play to preserve the integrity of the game.

The discussions among fans and analysts alike will likely continue as football authorities review the incidents for possible disciplinary actions. There is growing consensus on the need for more stringent regulations to safeguard players' health and maintain the sport's standards.

Both matches illustrated the stakes of the FA Cup and the significant impact such incidents can have not only on the results but also on player welfare. Moving forward, the spotlight will be on how the football community responds to these challenges and the steps taken to prevent similar occurrences.
