Edmonton's South Asian community is facing a wave of disturbances, with reports surfacing about targeted extortion and arson linked to criminal networks abroad.
The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) revealed they are investigating at least 27 incidents involving extortions, arsons, and firearms offenses believed to be orchestrated by criminals based out of India.
The situation escalated recently, with the police confirming they have set up a dedicated task force to address this serious issue impacting local home builders.
At least six young men have been arrested, but the investigation continues as police believe one suspect has already fled Canada.
The alleged activities include demands for substantial amounts of money, often communicated through WhatsApp messages, which have reportedly included personal threats against the victims.
A spokesperson from EPS emphasized the seriousness of the threats, stating, "Failure to pay the extorted sum results in arson or other property damage to new home builds, show homes, and related property."
Local authorities reported nine recent cases of arson involving homes either newly built or under construction, with most of these arson attacks confirmed as deliberate acts.
Fire investigators are determining the link between these incidents and the extortion efforts. Meanwhile, several of these fire incidents occurred across Edmonton's developing suburban areas.
Some fires compromised multiple homes, causing considerable damage, and there were instances where the damage was so extensive it melted siding off neighboring properties, according to local fire officials.
On the criminal front, the police noticed some attacks have led to drive-by shootings and heightened violence, indicating the seriousness of the threats faced by victims.
The targeted community is predominantly of Indian origin, with police stressing the need for collaboration between affected individuals and law enforcement.
Reports from other regions, like Ontario and British Columbia, suggest parallel trends of extortion targeting South Asian business owners, hinting at organized crime's nationwide reach.
Just north of Toronto, Peel Regional Police have also launched their own task force focused on disturbing extortion attempts primarily targeting their South Asian business community.
With the investigation evolving, Edmonton police urge anyone who has received threats or has pertinent information to come forward, allowing them to combat this illegal activity effectively.
Conversations with the local South Asian community are being organized to address concerns and strengthen ties with law enforcement, creating avenues for support and action.
On January 8, another suspicious fire erupted at a construction site, raising alarms about the safety and security of community members involved in home building.
Police continue their investigations, with the hope of curbing these criminal activities and restoring safety and trust within the community.
Community leaders and victims are urged to report any incidents, highlighting how important it is for law enforcement to engage effectively to tackle this crisis head-on.
