Exploring Femininity's Role In Sertanejo Music

Daniel's New Show Celebrates Women's Contributions to the Genre

On December 15, the Brazilian television audience will be introduced to the new program Viver Sertanejo, hosted by renowned Sertanejo singer Daniel, which focuses on the rising prominence of female artists within the genre. The show, filmed at Daniel's scenic farm in Brotas, São Paulo, aims to highlight the substantial contributions women have made to Sertanejo music, often dominated by male performers.

Viver Sertanejo intends to celebrate this feminine force through discussions and performances, featuring notable figures from different generations. Among the guests will be the celebrated songwriting duo known as Las Marcianas, which includes sisters Celina and Adriana. These pioneers of Sertanejo music paved the way for future generations even when they faced discouragement from their own family members.

Lauana Prado, another distinguished guest on the show, expressed her excitement about the project. "Tenho certeza que o Brasil vai se identificar e, mais do que isso, que as novas gerações vão conseguir se conectar," she mentioned, confident of the show's ability to resonate with its viewers. Lauana, who recently won the Hit of the Year category at Prêmio Multishow with her cover of 'Escrito nas Estrelas', emphasized the necessity of unearthing the past and redefining it for contemporary audiences.

This gesture of honoring female contributions is particularly poignant when considering the historical challenges women faced within the Sertanejo genre. Respected figures, such as Celina from Las Marcianas, shared their touching journeys on the program. Reflecting on her career, Celina recounted the opposition she and her sister experienced from their father, João Mineiro, who initially did not support their aspiration to pursue music. "Primeiro, nosso pai não queria e não deixava. Ele não aceitava. Meu pai ficou 12 anos sem conversar comigo," Celina revealed, her voice tinged with emotion.

João Mineiro, who was well-known for his musical success alongside his brother, Marciano, inadvertently set the stage for his daughters’ desiring to be part of the Sertanejo movement when they had no support from him. Celina's recollections of attempting to follow her passion for music reflect the broader narrative of women’s struggles within the industry—a poignant reminder of how far the genre and its representation have come.

During the debut episode, Celina shared how her father even forced her to hide her talent, illustrating the restrictive environment female artists had to navigate. She shared insights from this challenging period of her life: "Foi a pior fase da minha vida," she commented, emphasizing the emotional toll of her estrangement. The public's reaction to these revelations will surely deepen viewers' appreciation for their music and journeys.

Eventually, after over a decade of silence, João Mineiro sought reconciliation. "Um dia ele perguntou para mim: ‘Filha, o que você mais quer hoje na sua vida?’. Um abraço seu. Ele me abraçou chorando," Celina recounted vividly, cementing this moment as significant both personally and within the broader narrative of familial and societal acceptance of women pursuing their aspirations.

Bedecked with storytelling, musical performances, and emotionally charged dialogues, Viver Sertanejo will unite the rich heritage of Sertanejo with the powerful narratives of its female artists. The show is not merely about entertaining; it aims to educate audiences about the evolution of women’s roles and their increasing visibility within the genre.

With notable guests like Chitãozinho and Xororó, Maiara and Maraisa, and Paula Fernandes expected to grace the stage, the series promises to engage viewers thoroughly. Daniel expressed, "Unimos o útil ao agradável, e isso me deu a possibilidade de me mostrar mesmo, na minha essência, de ser mais leve," reflecting on the show’s heartfelt intention to bridge cultural gaps and celebrate the warmth and richness found within Brazilian rural life through Sertanejo music.

Overall, weaving together accounts of struggles and triumphs, Viver Sertanejo will give the spotlight to the female talent and the generational dialogue that's increasingly becoming central to the narrative of Sertanejo music. It symbolizes the change within the industry, promising new connections among past, present, and future artists shaping Brazilian music.
