Explore Festive Holiday Events Across The Netherlands

The 2024 holiday season brings delightful winter activities for everyone, from ice skating to Christmas markets.

With the holiday season just around the corner, the Netherlands is gearing up for another spectacular winter filled with festive events, joyous celebrations, and communal spirit. The year 2024 promises to be unforgettable, as towns and cities across the country open their doors to enchanting markets, lively performances, and winter activities perfect for all ages. From ice skating by historical landmarks to cozy Christmas markets, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

One of the standout winter events planned this year is the ice skating rink located at the heart of Bussum. Running from December 6, 2024, through January 5, 2025, Bussum op IJs will welcome visitors every day, including during the holidays. This enchanting ice rink offers fun for both children and adults, with facilities to warm up with hot chocolate or indulge in winter delicacies at the adjacent restaurant. A delightful atmosphere is guaranteed as families gather to create memories on the ice.

Meanwhile, just north of Utrecht, the Hoeve Ravenstein on Landgoed Groeneveld will transform its grounds with its annual Winter Paradise. This year, the highlight will be the Levende Kerststal, or live nativity scene, providing both entertainment and culture. Similarly, the nearby Christmas Twinkel at Lage Vuursche will bring warmth and coziness surrounded by fairy tale-like forests. A charming market will showcase winter delights, encapsulating the magic of the season.

Christmas is also coming to Baarn, where residents can enjoy the annual Christmas stallenroute. Throughout the town, 375 beautifully decorated nativity scenes will be displayed, visible from public roads, creating enchanting walks for families and individuals alike. Another unique event is the Kerstnostalgie hosted at Tuincentrum Vaarderhoogt, where visitors can experience festive workshops, including baking bread over the fire and exploring shops styled after Anton Pieck, known for his whimsical illustrations.

Moving back to the larger cities, Antwerp will host delightful winter markets as the city transforms under festive lights. Visitors can explore diverse attractions and find unique gifts at stalls dotting the city center. The markets present both local craftsmanship and delicious seasonal treats, ensuring shoppers have the perfect holiday experience.

Tilburg will invite visitors to embrace the winter atmosphere with shopping, theater performances, and live music. Notably, the city will feature light projections on the Heuvelse Kerk and host traditional Christmas markets where mulled wine and hot chocolate flow freely. Plus, the chance to skate on their picturesque ice rink adds to the festive experience.

Brussels will not be outdone; the Belgian capital features the largest Christmas market, with over 200 stalls ready to showcase both local delicacies and hand-crafted goods spread across several squares. Attendees can immerse themselves fully in holiday cheer with various activities and entertainment slated throughout the market's duration.

The Winter Feestival, scheduled for December 21 and 22, 2024, will create a winter paradise within the center of Steenbergen. ONS Steenbergen, collaborating with local businesses, will offer exciting activities like ice skating at the IJsfestijn and many festive surprises with holiday trees and fire pits adorning the scene. This community-driven effort aims to bring everyone together to celebrate the joy of the season.

Another notable event is the Santarun taking place this weekend, with 745 participants running through the streets of Bergen op Zoom dressed as Santa Claus. The event serves both as entertainment and as a fundraiser for local charities, showcasing the community's willingness to engage and support those in need. Organizer Joris Völker expressed pride and enthusiasm about the continuation of this tradition, highlighting its significance to the community.

All across the region, various municipalities are gearing up with exhibitions such as the remarkable showcase at the Stadhuis Weesp, where arts intertwined with community history will be on display. Visitors can admire works crafted from military uniforms, providing a reflective cultural experience.

Whether it’s the thrill of ice skating, the charm of festive markets, or community-focused charitable events, the Dutch holiday season is filled with opportunities to spread warmth and joy. The diverse range of activities planned ensures every visitor can partake and create memories during this magical time of the year.
