Experts Discuss China’s Growth And Thai Political Dynamics

Engaging exchanges highlight cultural insights and political clarifications in recent events.

On May 10, 2025, Professor Dr. Jarusree Jiraphas, a lecturer at the ASEAN Studies Program, Faculty of Liberal Arts, Payap University, shared insights on "China in My Eyes" during a discussion held in Beijing, China. This event was part of a program aimed at enhancing the skills of Thai journalists and media personnel, known as SBTJ 1.

Facilitated by Dr. Suebpong Prabpayai, Dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts, the discussion aimed to foster mutual understanding between Thailand and China. Professor Dr. Jarusree emphasized the importance of communicating in Thai to better grasp Chinese perspectives, particularly in the context of cultural tourism. He noted that while some views may not be entirely agreeable, it is crucial to recognize China's vision and potential across various dimensions, including the economy, society, environment, and education.

One of the key highlights of Professor Dr. Jarusree's presentation was the evolution of China's development strategies since 2015. He pointed out that in 2023, over 200,000 international students were studying in China, reflecting the country's commitment to education and cultural exchange. He also discussed advancements in public amenities, including modern restroom facilities equipped with automatic water supply systems and free Wi-Fi, underscoring the quality of life improvements in the nation.

Professor Dr. Jarusree noted that these changes were not merely superficial but stemmed from a deeper commitment to societal improvement. He remarked, "The place that is safest is the place closest to President Xi Jinping," highlighting the stable leadership that has driven China's progress.

In addition to discussing infrastructural advancements, Professor Dr. Jarusree elaborated on the concept of "inner and outer beauty," which focuses on developing moral character and behavior among citizens. This philosophy encompasses four key aspects: 心灵美 (inner beauty), 语言美 (beauty of language), 行为美 (beautiful actions), and 环境美 (beautiful environment). These principles aim to cultivate a society that values kindness, polite communication, disciplined behavior, and environmental cleanliness.

During the discussion, Professor Dr. Jarusree also addressed the historical and cultural significance of local museums in China, which play a crucial role in preserving and passing on knowledge about the nation's rich heritage. Many of these institutions feature quotes from President Xi Jinping, emphasizing the government's commitment to cultural preservation.

Professor Dr. Jarusree's insights were not limited to the positive aspects of China; he also acknowledged the need for continuous improvement. He candidly discussed the historical perceptions of Chinese public restrooms, which have often been viewed unfavorably by foreigners. However, he pointed out that the Chinese government has initiated a "Public Toilet Revolution" since 2015, leading to the establishment of over 200,000 modern and clean public restrooms nationwide by 2023.

In the realm of education, China has implemented a mandatory nine-year free education policy, ensuring that all children have access to schooling. The government closely monitors families to ensure compliance, demonstrating its commitment to educational equity. Professor Dr. Jarusree highlighted that there are currently more than 600 Thai students pursuing undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees across China, further strengthening the educational ties between the two nations.

Reflecting on China's rapid advancements, Professor Dr. Jarusree stated that these successes are not mere coincidences but result from strong leadership, vision, and long-term planning across various sectors. He concluded his presentation by introducing his book, "China Grows, I Can Barely Keep Up," which details his firsthand experiences living and studying in China. The book offers insights into Chinese life, education, culture, technological advancements, and rapid development, presented in an accessible manner for those seeking a comprehensive understanding of China.

The atmosphere during the lecture was warm and engaging, with participants actively exchanging ideas and perspectives. This discussion marked the final session of the training program, with a closing ceremony scheduled for May 11, 2025, where certificates will be awarded to the participants.

Meanwhile, on the same day, Mr. Wisutthi Chaiyanarun, a Member of Parliament from the Pheu Thai Party (PHT) and Chairman of the House Committee on Public Administration, addressed the media regarding the recent controversies surrounding former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. During a visit to Thaksin at the Royal Police Hospital, Mr. Wisutthi clarified that he did not engage in political discussions during his visit, emphasizing that Thaksin's current health status should not be intertwined with government affairs.

Mr. Wisutthi stated that while he is open to consulting with Thaksin on various governmental matters, such as healthcare projects like the 30-baht healthcare initiative, he firmly believes that Thaksin is not involved in the current government operations. He remarked, "Thaksin is not directing the government and has not interfered in any way," asserting that any consultations are strictly for the benefit of the country.

As the PHT prepares for a meeting on May 13, 2025, Mr. Wisutthi confirmed that the budget for the fiscal year 2569 will be a primary topic of discussion. He emphasized the need for collaboration between government and opposition members in reviewing budget allocations to ensure that funds are used effectively and do not contribute to any issues.

In summary, both discussions reflect the ongoing efforts to foster understanding and cooperation between Thailand and China while navigating the complexities of domestic politics within Thailand. As these dialogues continue, they highlight the importance of communication and collaboration in addressing the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for both nations.
