Excitement Builds For 2024 Total Solar Eclipse Viewing Events

Dallas-Fort Worth prepares for gatherings as community venues plan parties and activities for the astronomical spectacle

The upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, is generating buzz across the nation, especially as it promises to deliver spectacular views for many eager spectators. With the last visible total solar eclipse occurring over the Dallas area back in 1878, local residents are gearing up for this rare celestial event. Dallas lies directly in the eclipse's path of totality, meaning visitors and residents alike will experience the dramatic moment when the moon completely covers the sun, casting darkness upon the day.

Marking this event as one not to miss, various venues throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area are throwing parties and special viewing events. From bars to parks to museums, there’s something for everyone looking to witness the magic of the eclipse.

The Westin Dallas Stonebriar Golf Resort & Spa is one such venue making plans for the big day. They are hosting a unique silent disco, where guests can dance the day away under the shadow of the moon. Equipped with special headphones and provided eclipse glasses, adults can attend for $50, and children can get in for just $20. A fun way to embrace the day, this event promises to offer both entertainment and fantastic views of the eclipse.

Meanwhile, Southfork Ranch, famously known as the beloved filming location for the TV show "Dallas," is planning to host its own free Eclipse & Sip event on the lawn. Guests can enjoy box lunches for $20, and there’s even a cash bar available. They’ll be giving out complimentary eclipse glasses until supplies run out—perfect for those looking to enjoy some nostalgia along with their eclipse viewing.

Pizza lovers can find refuge at Mr. Gatti’s, where multiple locations across Plano, Allen, and Fort Worth will welcome customers with free eclipse glasses and their regular menu of pizzas and beverages. It’s shaping up to be the ideal spot for families who want to grab some comfort food during the special occasion.

For those looking for live music and food trucks, Addison Circle Park promises to answer the call with its eclipse party. The event will feature food trucks offering diverse fare, yoga sessions, and giggles galore as local acts perform live. Entry is free, ensuring everyone can join the fun without worrying about ticket costs.

Those interested in more specialized eclipse-themed treats can head over to Birdcall restaurants. They’re introducing their limited-time Totality Shake, available from April 2 through April 8. This unique shake combines vanilla with black tahini and Oreo crumbles, making it as delicious as it is thematic. Plus, they’ll hand out eclipse glasses with each shake sold—one more way to celebrate!

This is just the tip of the iceberg as the Dallas area gears up. Looking for something academic? The Cotton Bowl is hosting "The Sun, The Moon, and You" event, featuring science and space experts, including the famed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. This free viewing experience will include telescope observations led by amateur astronomers, along with engaging live programming geared toward children.

Another hotspot is the Dallas Zoo, where admission on this iconic day will allow visitors to witness how animals react to the unusual twilight. Activities will abound, including hands-on eclipse-related learning opportunities and treats like homemade moon pies available for noshing. The zoo plans to broadcast NASA's coverage of the event to keep everyone informed and entertained.

One of the hottest tickets is already sold out at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. However, it set out to offer visitors access to more than 20 astronomers, STEM activities, games, and live performances, ensuring guests not only witness the event but engage with it as well.

For those looking for something different, the weekend leading up to the big day will feature free events downtown. Downtown Dallas Inc. is collaborating with various partners to organize activities such as yoga, art projections, and guided walking tours of the city—encouraging participants to enjoy everything Dallas has to offer leading up to the total eclipse.

Furthermore, there's also the TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE ARTS event, where art lovers can party it up to the tunes of local bands, along with casual activities such as picnicking and enjoying the view with friends and family.

At the Constellation Club, casual diners can enjoy lunch with their eclipse watching, and for those looking for upscale views, the Sky Blu Rooftop at the Tru by Hilton is offering panoramic skyline views alongside classic refreshments.

This total solar eclipse isn’t just about the celestial event itself; it’s become a reason for communities to gather, celebrate, and enjoy local hotspots. The diverse range of activities organized throughout Dallas-Fort Worth reflects the excitement and anticipation building up to this special day. Whether it’s dancing the night away at the Westin, enjoying pizza at Gatti’s, or experiencing unique programming at the museum, there’s no shortage of options to enjoy this remarkable astronomical occurrence.

With so much to look forward to, it’s hard not to wonder how people 140 years ago felt when they faced their own total solar eclipse. Will it spark the same sense of wonder among the millions who gather this spring? The answer is quietly eclipsed just beyond the horizon, but one thing’s for sure: North Texas is ready to party.
