Eugenio Derbez Faces Backlash Over Selena Gomez Critique

Karla Sofía Gascón defends Gomez amid controversy as public interest rises for Emilia Pérez

Recent discussions about Selena Gomez's performance in the upcoming film Emilia Pérez have risen to the forefront of entertainment news, igniting controversy and passionate debates within the industry. The spark for this heated conversation came when popular Mexican actor and comedian Eugenio Derbez publicly critiqued Gomez's acting via his podcast, calling it "indefendible" due to her struggles with the Spanish language during filming.

The backlash stemming from Derbez's comments was swift and significant, prompting many fans of Gomez to defend her talent and dedication to the role. One prominent voice among the supporters is actress Karla Sofía Gascón, who co-stars alongside Gomez. Gascón strongly defended Gomez's performance, arguing for both the actress's abilities and the importance of consistency when voicing opinions.

Gascón expressed her disapproval of Derbez's abrupt change of opinion after the online backlash he faced. She firmly stated during her interview with CNN en Español, "Lo que no me gusta de la banda es cuando dice una cosa y luego (hace) la contraria al mismo tiempo. Si has dicho algo, llévalo hasta el final." This could be translated as her displeasure with those who say one thing publicly and then reverse course when faced with disagreement. She added, "Si has metido la pata, está bien que pidas perdón, pero si es tu opinión y a ti te parece que es correcto, ¿quién te impide expresar tu opinión?"

Derbez's comments, made during his podcast Hablemos de cine con..., came as he labeled Gomez's performance as lacking, especially emphasizing her difficulties with the Spanish language. He asserted, "No hay excusa. Me equivoqué y admiro profundamente tu carrera y tu buen corazón," admitting he felt compelled to apologize after realizing the weight of his words.

Responding to the original critique, Gomez took to TikTok to share her thoughts, asserting she gave her all to the demanding role. "I did the best I could with the time I was 'given,' and it doesn’t take away from the heart and work I put behind it," she remarked. This response highlighted not only her commitment to the role but also her thoughtful approach to the challenges she faced.

Gascón, who also works closely with Gomez, took the opportunity to uplift her co-star amid the adversity, stating genuinely, "Ha hecho el trabajo mejor de su vida, creo. Yo siempre se lo digo, aunque ella no sé si es consciente de esto," which means she believes Gomez delivered one of her best performances yet. Gascón noted the character of Gomez, Jessica, does not represent any specific nationality, hence there should not be criticism concerning her Spanish accent. "Su personaje no es mexicano ni español," she reminded critics, explaining Jessica is merely "una persona de Estados Unidos que vive en la frontera y se ha casado con un narcotraficante, y puede hablar hasta en alemán si quiere.”

The film Emilia Pérez, directed by Jacques Audiard, features Gomez playing this complex character who navigates life on the U.S.-Mexican border. While anticipation for the film has surged, especially with its upcoming release on January 23, 2025, the controversy has undeniably amplified public interest, intertwining the fates of the film's release with the personal discussions of talent and authenticity.

Selena Gomez's involvement as a leading actress raises questions about the expectations placed on Latinx performers, especially those stepping outside of their typical roles. Gascón's passionate defense reiterates the necessity for acceptance and encouragement, shedding light on the pressures faced by artists like Gomez, who often bear the brunt of public scrutiny.

The excitement for Gomez's performance is palpable, especially from fans and insiders alike who understand the depth of the challenges involved. This entire saga encourages larger conversations not strictly about performance but also about identity, representation, and the space for growth within the creative industry.

Indeed, with the film's release drawing closer, it will be intriguing to witness not just the audience's reception of Emilia Pérez, but also how it affects the narrative surrounding the careers of those involved. Will the criticism serve as fuel for Gomez’s growth as she embraces the art of acting across different cultures and languages? Only time will tell.
