The European Union has recently committed to providing Ukraine with a new military aid package worth €3.5 billion as tensions with Russia escalate. The announcement was made on February 24, 2025, by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, during her visit to Kyiv.
"Putin is trying harder than ever to win this war on the battlefield. His goal remains Ukraine's capitulation. And then we know what could happen next. Because it has happened before. The fate of Ukraine is not just at stake. It's the fate of Europe as well," von der Leyen emphasized, highlighting the pressing need for solidarity against Russian aggression.
The windfall aid is part of the EU's comprehensive effort to reinforce Ukraine's defenses, which has seen over €134 billion allocated since the beginning of the conflict, stating at least €50 billion of this has been designated for military support. "We want to accelerate immediate delivery of weapons and ammunition, and this will be the focus of efforts over the next few weeks," von der Leyen added.
Looking forward, Kaja Kallas, the EU foreign policy chief, indicated plans to discuss detailed provisions during an extraordinary European summit scheduled for March 6, 2025. "The details, especially the amounts, will be decided and discussed during the extraordinary European summit on March 6," she stated.
This commitment to military assistance is being framed by European leaders as not only supporting Ukraine but also securing the democratic values and stability of Europe.
