Ethanol Truck Explosion Causes Major Traffic Chaos In Palhoça

A truck explosion on BR-101 leaves five injured and blocks traffic in both directions.

A truck carrying ethanol exploded on Morro dos Cavalos, in Palhoça, on Sunday, April 6, 2025, causing a massive fire that impacted 25 vehicles, including cars and trucks. The incident occurred at approximately 1:37 PM, leading to significant traffic disruptions on the BR-101 highway in both directions.

According to the Polícia Rodoviária Federal (PRF), the accident resulted in five individuals suffering from burns, with some requiring hospital treatment. Eyewitness accounts described a scene of chaos, as drivers honked and shouted in panic, attempting to escape the flames that engulfed their vehicles.

The explosion and subsequent fire ignited not only the truck but also affected nearby vehicles, with reports indicating that three trucks and 22 cars were directly impacted by the blaze. The PRF confirmed that the truck was carrying ethyl alcohol, a highly flammable substance, which contributed to the intensity of the fire.

By around 2:30 PM, traffic was severely backed up, with queues stretching over six kilometers to the south and eight kilometers to the north. The Arteris Litoral Sul, the concessionaire managing the highway, reported that there was no immediate forecast for the reopening of the affected sections.

In a statement, Arteris Litoral Sul advised motorists to avoid the area and stay updated through their social media channels. "The lanes in both directions remain closed. Currently, there are six kilometers of traffic congestion to the south and eight kilometers to the north. No detour is available in the area," the company said.

As emergency services worked to control the fire, the PRF began removing damaged vehicles from the highway around 5:15 PM. Those who had been in the affected vehicles were released after signing a protocol, and the cars were taken to the PRF's impound lot.

The fire was reported to have been partially controlled by approximately 3 PM, but the damage had already been extensive. Videos circulating on social media captured the thick gray smoke rising from the highway and the frantic attempts of drivers to alert others to the danger.

In the aftermath of the accident, the PRF indicated that there were no nearby detours available for northbound travelers. By 4:15 PM, traffic congestion had increased to approximately nine kilometers in the northbound direction and ten kilometers in the southbound direction.

Authorities are continuing to assess the situation and manage the aftermath of the explosion. The PRF urged drivers to remain patient as they worked to clear the highway and ensure public safety.

This incident highlights the dangers associated with transporting hazardous materials on public roadways. The swift response from emergency services, including the Corpo de Bombeiros Militar de Santa Catarina, was crucial in mitigating the fire's spread and providing aid to the injured.

As the investigation into the cause of the accident unfolds, local officials are emphasizing the importance of safety protocols for transporting flammable substances. The community is left shaken by the event, with many expressing concern over the safety of the BR-101, a vital transportation route.

In the wake of the explosion, the Arteris Litoral Sul has committed to enhancing safety measures along the highway, reiterating their dedication to protecting both drivers and the environment. They have also encouraged drivers to adhere to traffic regulations and stay informed about road conditions.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the potential hazards that can arise from transporting dangerous materials and the need for continued vigilance and safety in our transportation systems.
