ERC Ingolstadt Claims Victory Over Nürnberg Ice Tigers

Ingolstadt takes commanding 2-0 series lead with strong performance in game two.

The ERC Ingolstadt showcased a commanding performance on March 18, 2025, during the second game of the DEL playoff quarterfinals against the Nürnberg Ice Tigers, securing a 3:1 victory. This win puts the Ingolstadt Panthers ahead in the series with two wins, as they aim for a spot in the semifinals.

In the heart of the Nürnberger Arena, the match started with ever-increasing intensity, both teams colliding physically from the first puck drop. Ingolstadt's Kenny Agostino opened the scoring in the 13th minute, deftly redirecting a shot from Leon Hüttl with his stick to find the net. Despite solid attempts from Nürnberg, including a notable shot from Johannes Krauß, Ingolstadt held on to their lead into the first intermission.

As the second period unfolded, Nürnberg ramped up their offensive pressure. The Ice Tigers capitalized on a power play in the 32nd minute, with Jeremy McKenna firing a powerful shot into the bottom corner, leveling the score at 1-1. The momentum appeared to shift in favor of the home team, yet Ingolstadt’s goalie, Christian Heljanko, was ready to thwart further advancement, making one spectacular save after another.

Just when it seemed Nürnberg had seized control, Agostino struck again, scoring another critical goal in the 39th minute, once more during a power play. His wrist shot from a tight angle put Ingolstadt ahead 2-1, a lead they were determined to maintain heading into the final frame.

Despite continuous efforts from the Ice Tigers, including several near misses from Cole Maier and ensuing shots that kept Heljanko on his toes, the Panthers remained resolute. Heljanko’s stellar performance shone again when he made a critical save against a close-range shot from Charlie Gerard.

In the closing minute of the game, with the Ice Tigers desperately pushing for an equalizer and having pulled their goalie for an extra skater, Ingolstadt's Riley Sheen sealed the victory by scoring into the empty net, finalizing the score at 3-1.

“Right from the first puck drop, both teams were incredibly physical,” remarked Panthers' head coach Mark French. “The first period was quite balanced, but we took our chances better as the game progressed.”

Heljanko echoed his coach’s outlook, stating, “Nürnberg plays very well at home. The guys blocked many shots, and today, I felt like I was close to my best performance.” His efforts which included a whopping 41 saves were vital to Ingolstadt's success.

Looking forward, the Panthers need just two more wins to advance to the next round, while the Ice Tigers will be feeling the pressure to recover as the series heads back to Ingolstadt for game three on March 21, 2025. With both teams displaying skill and tenacity, fans can expect another thrilling encounter.
